About Vincennes, Indiana

Nestled in the Ohio Valley along the eastern bank of the Wabash River, discover one of the state's best kept secrets. Vincennes is a quiet, charming town located in southwest Indiana, offering a safe environment with three award-winning public school districts, along with two private, affordable Christian schools.

In Vincennes, you will find beautiful parks with camping, hiking, picnic areas, walking trails, baseball/softball fields, basketball courts, swimming pools, tennis courts, a new skate park, and much more. Travel only a few miles from town and you can find lakes and reservoirs for boating, fishing, and other water activities. If you like to snow ski, you can enjoy Paoli Peaks, also located in southern Indiana. Whether you want to go camping for the night in a rustic cabin, take a walk, or just take the children to play, you can find a place that takes you back to the serenity of yesterday.

If you are looking for shopping, Vincennes offers numerous specialty boutiques throughout the city, along with some of the national department store chains. Stroll downtown for a day of shopping, eating, and old-fashioned entertainment. Main Street is still a gathering place and a site for parades and festivals throughout the year, and a focal point for growth in the community.

Vincennes offers something for everyone. Theater lovers can enjoy live performances at the new Red Skelton Theater, or on Broadway at Fifth by the Old Town Players. The Northwest Territory Art Guild provides a supportive atmosphere for sculptors, painters, and illustrators whose works grace the community. If you want to take in a movie, you can choose from eight different shows at the new movieplex, and then wind down with soda and some homemade ice cream at the old time soda fountain.

Vincennes is also the home of the first college in Indiana. Vincennes University is a public, two-year, comprehensive community college with a system wide enrollment of around 8,000 students coming from all 92 Indiana counties, 25 other states, and numerous other countries. The University is known for their outstanding nursing program, as well as their aviation program, and has recently begun offering four-year degrees in multiple areas.

Looking for a great place to have some family fun? Southern Indiana offers two beautiful state parks, four show caves, a restored pioneer 20-mile train ride and Patoka Lake Recreation Area. You can canoe the Blue River, picnic at Spring Mill State Park, or go horseback riding at the working western Wilstem Dude Ranch. Paoli Peaks in Paoli, Indiana is a complete ski resort with a 300-foot vertical drop, 15 trails, and 8 lifts and only a short drive from Vincennes. In a little over an hour, you can be enjoying the day at the renowned theme park of Holiday World & Splashin' Safari which offers not only amazing rides for young and old but includes admission to the adjoining water park. This is definitely #1 for family fun in Southern Indiana.
