Hospital Description:
St. John’s Hospital is a 491-bed teaching facility, one of the largest facilities in downstate Illinois and one of the largest Catholic hospitals in the United States. The hospital has a large cardiac and pediatric program. In 2001 a renovation and new building project was completed in the Emergency Department, which serves an annual volume of 60,500 patients. The Emergency Department is a Level I Trauma Center with a new Chest Pain Evaluation Center offering a state-of-the-art facility in an ideal practice setting. Emergency physicians currently receive academic appointments at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The Emergency Department also has lab and radiology services right in the department. The current department consists of 31 rooms with 20 beds in the main area. The ED South with 11 rooms and beds is open from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Location Description:
Springfield, the state capitol since 1837, is located in central Illinois and has a population of 113,000 residents. The area is rich in history, with much of it being associated with President Lincoln. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is a new attraction to the city of Springfield. There are few communities the size of greater Springfield that enjoy such a wealth of entertainment and cultural amenities.

Education is both a major industry and key ingredient for greater Springfield. Included with many private and parochial schools, there is Lincoln Land Community College and the University of Illinois Springfield.

Qualifications:
Board-eligible or board-certified in Emergency Medicine. Prompt Care physicians must be board-certified in a Primary Care specialty with similar experience.
