Sanford School of Medicine of The University of South Dakota seeks a fellowship-trained, board-certified geriatrician, either an internist or family physician (depending on experience), to serve as Program Director for a new Geriatric Fellowship. This position is endowed by the Good Samaritan Society, the nation’s largest nonprofit nursing home chain with national headquarters in Sioux Falls. The candidate must have a minimum of 5 years as an active faculty member in an accredited fellowship program.

The Director’s primary responsibility will be to develop and direct an Internal Medicine-Family Medicine Geriatric Fellowship.  Duties consist of administrative activities, oversight of clinical care, teaching and research activities within the Fellowship and the Medical School at large. Nationally known geriatricians are available to support the position and the possibility exists of recruiting a colleague as Associate Program Director.  The Good Samaritan Society would utilize the Director and supporting geriatricians to provide national Medical Directorship duties for its 240 facilities. South Dakota has one of the highest proportions of population over sixty five. Sanford School of Medicine houses the South Dakota Institute of Geriatrics with the mandate of education, research and service supporting geriatrics throughout the state. Resources of the Institute are available to further professional interests in any of those areas.

The successful candidate must qualify for a faculty appointment at Sanford School of Medicine.  Information regarding the Sanford School of Medicine is available at http://www.usd.edu/med/md/overview.cfm Questions regarding this position or the School should be directed to LuAnn.Eidsness@usd.edu (Chair of Internal Medicine) or Bruce.Vogt@usd.edu  (Chair of Family Medicine).   Sioux Falls (http://www.siouxfalls.com/home.cfm) is a family-oriented community with excellent schools and abundant recreational activities.  Qualified candidates should submit their CV on-line at www.yourfuture.sdbor.edu.     EE0/AA

About The Community

Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is South Dakota’s largest city and the county seat of Minnehaha County. It serves as a healthcare, governmental, law enforcement and financial hub for the area. With a population of 200,000, the city has been judged by Money Magazine as the “best place to live in America” for its quality of life, including its low crime rate, high-quality education, clean air and water, lack of traffic congestion, and friendly residents.

Sioux Falls offers a diverse blend of manufacturing, banking and financial industries, medical services, transportation, communications, and wholesale/retail trade for service and business opportunities. Because South Dakota has no corporate income tax, no personal income tax, and no business inventory tax, over 2,500 new jobs have been created each year as a result of the influx of new businesses and expansions of existing businesses.

Education

Sioux Falls is a great place to raise a family. The school system offers an array of educational opportunities, with 24 public elementary schools, four middle schools, and three public senior high schools. There are also 16 private schools affiliated with various religious and private organizations. The post-secondary opportunities include five colleges, nearby state universities (including the University of South Dakota Medical School), and a number of business and vocational schools.
