About Twin Falls, ID

Twin Falls is a Great Place

Twin Falls, Idaho is called the Great Rift. South Central Idaho and the Snake River Plain is a place you can feel the forces of nature.  Kayakers can ride the rapids and easily imagine what it was like to feel the Bonneville flood smash through the Snake River Canyon 15,000 years ago.  In fact, no matter what your game, golfing,  fishing, hunting, bird watching, bicycling, hiking, camping, white water rafting, rock climbing, skiing or shopping-- you can pursue it in South Central Idaho.

Twin Falls is situated in the scenic area of South Central Idaho, located 72 miles south of famous Sun Valley, 121 miles southeast of Boise, and 114 miles west of Pocatello. Twin Falls has a population of 35,000 people with projected annual growth of 1.5%.  The population of Twin Falls County is approximately 62,000.

South Central Idaho (Magic Valley) has a four-season climate. Daytime highs in July are about 91 (with comfortable overnight lows of 54), while January temperatures typically range from about 37 in the daytime to 19 overnight. The city receives relatively little precipitation, about 17 inches of snow and 9 inches of rain each year. Residents enjoy sunny skies 260 days annually, and the air is dry and clear. The Magic Valley area’s climate replicates the high desert plains, with fields of sage brush offering a beautiful back drop to the lushly green irrigated fields.

The economy has a solid base of industry. Although Twin Falls has long been an agriculture center (dairy, trout and crops), six of our largest employers are involved in growing and processing foods, the Magic Valley is a leader in other fields too including education, technology, healthcare, transportation and the retail/services sectors.

These employers are College of Southern Idaho, Dell Corporation, and Magic Valley Medical Center. Twin Falls has one major mall and a busy downtown area with numerous specialty shops. Twin Falls also has major specialty stores like Home Depot, Target, Costco, Old Navy, Best Buy, and TJ Maxx. Restaurant services include major chains like Outback Steakhouse, Chili’s and Applebee’s and many locally owned restaurants. The local flavors include Thai, Sushi and European Cuisines.

Recreation

South Central Idaho offers unlimited recreational opportunities, scenic beauty, and a sense of freedom and well-being found only in the Rockies.  Numerous tourist attractions include the Snake River Canyon, which is spanned by the Perrine Bridge.  This bridge is 1500 feet long and is 480 feet above the canyon floor.

Nearby, Shoshone Falls has a vertical drop of 212 feet and spans a width of 1,000 feet, making it 52 feet higher than Niagra Falls.

Local country clubs and community golf courses provide a challenge to the most ardent golfers.  A number of community recreational facilities including several large baseball and softball fields as well as both indoor and outdoor tennis courts and swimming pools compliment the varied recreational opportunities available in this community. A Soccer Field is in the planning stages now.

Other tourist attractions in the city, or nearby, include Shoshone Ice Caves, Mammoth Caves, Craters of the Moon National Monument, Balanced Rock, Thousand Springs, and the Sawtooth National Forest Recreational area.  World famous Sun Valley, a year-round scenic and recreational resort and ski area is less than ninety minutes away.  Skiers have fifty-four groomed runs to select as the sixteen high volume chair lifts whisk them 2,300 vertical feet up to Bald Mountain’s 9,200 foot summit.  In the summer, there are four golf courses and more than eighty indoor and outdoor tennis courts.  Over 60 international restaurants provide all types of dining and entertainment.

Big game hunting includes antelope, bear, deer, elk, moose and sheep.  Several lakes and rivers, including Salmon Falls Reservoir, Magic Reservoir, Thousand Springs, Billingsly Creek, Silver Creek, Cooper Basin, and the Snake River, provide popular fishing spots.  White water adventure trips, ice skating, camping, hiking, swimming, boating, water skiing, and other recreational opportunities are available at various times of the year, both in the city and within close proximity to Twin Falls. In fact, the Middle Salmon River in South Central Idaho, was rated one of the best white water rafting areas in the United States by the New York Times Travel Section in 1999.

In fact, no matter what your game whether, golfing, fishing, hunting, bird watching, bicycling, hiking, camping, white water rafting, rock climbing, skiing or shopping-- you can pursue it in South Central Idaho.
