The regional Niswonger Children’s Hospital, opened in March of 2009, is the only facility between Knoxville and Roanoke that is a member of the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI), currently serving more than 200,000 children in a four-state, 29-county region. It is the replacement facility for The Children's Hospital at Johnson City Medical Center, which has been the regional leader in pediatric services since 1992. Niswonger Children’s Hospital works in partnership with the ETSU College of Medicine and has more than 20 pediatric subspecialties and 127 physicians on staff. It is one of six national affiliates of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Niswonger Children’s Hospital offers transport services dedicated to the transfer of critically ill infants and children from referral hospitals.
The Johnson City Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Mountain States Health Alliance, the largest not-for-profit 15 hospital system in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. The Johnson City Medical Center is a 550-bed level I trauma center with the region's only dedicate Wings Air Rescue.
Additionally, the system is affiliated with a larger network of providers in Northeast Tennessee, Southwest Virginia and Western North Carolina called the Mountain States Healthcare Network. This 50+ institution network has created multiple opportunities within a 3 state region. JCMC is the primary host teaching facility for the James H.
