The Geri PACT Physician is assigned to the Geri PACT clinic Section of Geriatrics Rehabilitation and Extended Care (GREC), VA Pacific Islands Healthcare System (VAPIHCS). VA provides patient centered care, delivered by engaged, collaborative teams in an integrated environment that supports learning and continuous improvement. The Geri PACT Physician must have outstanding clinical and interpersonal skills as a member of the VA professional health care team and provide continuous veteran-centered care and services to Veterans and their family members.

The Geri PACT Physician provides outpatient primary and geriatric consultation services to Veterans and provides clinical support to the Geri PACT Team Members under the facility outpatient Geri PACT Program. Uses evidence-based practices to provide comprehensive outpatient geriatric primary care and geriatric consultation to veterans in the Geri PACT clinic. The Geri PACT physician works with the clinic Interdisciplinary care team to establish a plan of care for the veterans on the service. Participates in interdisciplinary team meetings to review active cases. Implements strategic care plan to appropriately facilitate utilization and access to other needed medical services. Monitors quality and service metrics across the continuum of care to ensure departmental goals are achieved. Provides education to staff as needed. Completes appropriate documentation of patient care services in CPRS. Adheres to the practice of confidentiality regarding patients, families, and stakeholders. Completes appropriate mandatory training.

The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Works closely with all healthcare professionals throughout VAPIHCS and provides consultations to other services on the care of geriatric veterans.
  • Participates in different modes of care delivery as appropriate such as VA Video Connect (VVC)
  • Participates in travel, as appropriate, for consultations
  • Participates in the CLC Call Schedule
  • Participates in clinic coverage
  • Participates in quality assurance programs. Complies with all quality performance measures and improvement programs. The physician will be subject to professional performance, including clinical and technical skills, as well as VAPIHCS performance improvement monitoring activities (e.g. Ongoing Professional Evaluations (OPPE), Focused Professional Practice Evaluations (FPPE), etc.).
  • Participates in Medical Staff committees and task forces as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the GEM Director, Chief of Geriatrics and Extended care or ACOS GREC
  • Participate in VA continuing educational activities and mandatory training
  • May be assigned in a management leadership position as needed and shall complete training and functions in this role

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
