Facility Description

HCA Healthcare acquired a Davie property for $22 million, with plans to build a teaching hospital near Nova Southeastern University.

HCA Health Services of Florida, an affiliate of the hospital giant (NYSE: HCA), purchased 7.5 acres at 3400 S. University Drive from University Associates Limited, a joint venture between Miami-based Brandon Co. and a for-profit arm of NSU. George Hanbury, the president of NSU, said the sold land includes part of the parking lot and the southern portion of a shopping center, which will be torn down.

Previously, University Associates sold 1.5 acres there to HCA for $1.9 million, so the hospital company now owns 9 acres of the 30-acre property next to NSU's campus.

HCA already has a free-standing emergency room there. It obtained state approval to build a 200-bed hospital there after transferring the same number of beds from Plantation General Hospital.

Hanbury said the hospital should break ground in November and take 24 to 30 months to complete. It will partner with NSU's College of Osteopathic Medicine and its new College of Allopathic Medicine, in addition to the university's other health profession programs.

HCA officials couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

The hospital is the centerpiece of NSU's Academical Village mixed-use project on the site, Hanbury said. Future phases will include a hotel, an academic and medical office building, retail and residential. NSU is seeking development partners for those elements, he said.
