University of Minnesota Physicians seeks a Board eligible/Board certified Physician Assistant to provide care and services to patients in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. The position will provide patients with expert patient care and coordination of services assisting the practice in improving patient satisfaction and enhancing the quality of care provided to patients through increased access and coordinated services.

 

For patients with cardiac conditions, ranging from the routine to the complex (such as end-stage heart failure and thoracic organ transplantation), our specialists provide comprehensive surgical expertise. Valve repair for aortic and mitral valve pathology is commonly performed, employing innovative techniques of leaflet excision, chordal replacement, annuloplasty, and valve resuspension. 

 

The Certified PA  provides and coordinates surgical care for adults with selected cardiothoracic diseases throughout the course of evaluation and treatment, including hospital admission, surgical intervention, inpatient care, and discharge planning. Provides and coordinates continuity of care between the hospital floor setting, operating room, and clinic. This includes clinic follow-up, providing information to referring physicians and institutions, and patient /family education. This individual must show commitment to exemplary patient care. Shares responsibility for assessment and management of patient in cardiothoracic surgical services. Writes admission and daily notes, orders and directs discharge planning and follow up. Works to improve the quality of care and to decrease length of stay on the inpatient service. Obtains patient histories, perform physical and psychological health assessments, provides patient and family education and counseling, ensures continuity of health care services. Provides direct management of postoperative care in the clinical settings of the ICU, step-down units, and wards including removing chest tubes, drains and temporary pacemaker wires.

  

The position is available at the University of Minnesota Medical Center and may assist with coverage/call at Fairview Southdale Hospital. Team members at both sites work collaboratively.

 

A qualified candidate will be a graduate of an accredited physician assistant training program. Have a current MN PA license with prescriptive authority through the MN Board of Medical Practice. Be certified through the NCCPA and meet threshold criteria/qualifications for Credentialing and Privileges. Have willingness and interest to learn and work in the OR and ICU settings.


Previous ICU, Cardiothoracic Surgery or Cardiology experience preferred.
