Hematology & Oncology Opportunity - Kansas City, MO

The Kansas City VA Health Care System (KCVAHCS) is seeking applications for the position of staff physician as part of National Tele-health oncology program. The position would require obtaining affiliation with an academic institution affiliate,  University of Kansas Medical Center. We're seeking a board certified, full-time permanent hospital employed physician to join our Hematology/Oncology department at the Kansas City VA Medical Center Hospital. Our ideal candidate will provide Tele-oncology and Tele-hematology services patients from KCVA and other VA facilities for at least 3 days / week as part of national tele-oncology program, outpatient and inpatient duties as assigned by the section chief, supervision of inpatient as well as outpatient chemotherapy and infusion procedures; perform bone marrow aspirates and biopsies and conduct of hemopathology conferences; provide attendance on the Hematology/Oncology consult service; providing consultative support to all inpatient services. The physician also sees continuity and referral of Hem/Onc patients and attends the Fellows clinic when required. For those patients with active cancer or hematologic disease, the physician may serve as the primary physician. Join a department that is expanding clinical area to better serve veteran patients!

 The Staff Physicians have a major teaching role within the division including its fellowship program. Academic activities includes serving as principal investigator of clinical trials in the field of specialization, administrative oversight of regulatory requirement and compliances with IRB regulation in human research, development of specialty oncology program, clinical and basic science research effort. The position includes a major role in the clinical, research, administrative and educational programs of the Hematology/Oncology Section. The physician will take part in supervision and education of fellows and residents, participate in didactic sessions, conferences and give presentations and lectures to trainees. The physician provides educational training for Hematology/Oncology Residents, Medical Students and Hem/Onc fellows  Applicants must be eligible for appointment at the VA. The ideal candidate for the staff physician positions will be suitable for academic appointment at the University of Kansas City at the level of assistant, associate or full professor, as evidenced by a strong track record of academic and/or clinical excellence. This will be a hybrid position between KCVA and University of Kansas.  The clinical activities of the Section of Hematology/Oncology span the breath of the subspecialty and are strongly supported by surgery, pathology, radiology and the other Faculty members of Medicine Service.

  The Kansas City VAMC is located on a 40 acre campus in eastern Kansas City. This is a major metropolitan area with a population exceeding 1.5 million. Our primary service area includes over 200,00 veterans, some 25 percent of whom are over 60. With a special emphasis on customer service, we are honored to serve the veterans of the Heartland. Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, (May be required to work evenings or weekends as a 24/7 Full-Time Physician).

  • Must be U.S. Citizen – Non-US Citizens may be considered
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the U.S.
  • Board Certification in Hematology & Oncology is preferred, but Board Eligibility may also be considered. Additional board certification in Internal Medicine is preferred.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
