The Albany Veterans Affairs Medical Center has an opening for a full-time Academic Pulmonary/Critical Care physician. The Pulmonary/Critical Care/Sleep Section is a pillar of the institution and boasts a strong clinical and teaching reputation in the region. We are looking for physician candidates interested in personal growth and career development in our mission arms of excellent care, superior teaching and cutting edge research.

The position involves inpatient and outpatient Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care Medicine and Sleep Medicine. The candidate will have educational responsibilities for Pulmonary/Critical Care fellows, Internal Medicine residents and medical students. Applicants must possess a full and unrestricted license in any state and must qualify for an academic appointment at The Albany Medical College of Union University. Applicants must be board certified in Internal Medicine, with subspecialty certification in Pulmonary Disease. Critical Care Medicine and Sleep Medicine boards are desirable. Duties of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Attending responsibilities for the Medical ICU team (Medical Residents)
  • Critical Care consultation in Surgical ICU (with Medical Residents and Critical Care Fellow)
  • Teaching is an integral part of the work of a VA staff Pulmonologist. Teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, and Fellows is required.
  • The staff Pulmonary/Critical Care Specialist exercises corporate citizenship by serving as leader and/or active member on Medical Center committees as requested.
  • Inpatient and/or outpatient consultations for Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine.
  • Must be eligible for an academic appointment with the Albany Medical College of Union University.
  • The staff Pulmonary/Critical Care Specialist provides expanded access to services via off normal tour or on call periods.
  • Timely documentation (notes and encounter forms) is necessary in all areas in accordance with facility policy. All administrative work should be completed in a timely fashion.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. with rotating call for weekday and weekends.

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel

  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
