The Brooklyn Campus is a tertiary care, academically-affiliated with the State University of New York-Downstate (SUNY). The Brooklyn Campus has bed services in acute medicine, surgery, psychiatry and residential substance abuse. Specialized programs exist in comprehensive cancer care and non-invasive cardiology. The Cancer Care Program includes special expertise in palliative care and radiation oncology. The Brooklyn Campus is apart of the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System (VA NYHHS) which consists of three campuses located in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn; the East Side of Manhattan; and in St. Albans, Queens.

Education Debt Reduction Program (Student Loan Repayment): This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program. To participate in the program, you must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA Policy 1021 and submit your application within four months of appointment. The final award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office.

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases

The Department of Veterans Affairs NY Harbor Healthcare System is seeking a full-time Non-Invasive Cardiologist at its Campus in Brooklyn, New York. The position requires outstanding clinical, teaching, and interpersonal skills. Responsibilities will include the provision of comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care to patients with Cardiovascular Diseases; the interpretation of stress tests, tilt table tests, echocardiograms, and electrocardiograms; and supervision of Cardiology Fellows and Internal Medicine Residents. Expertise to develop and engage in clinical research is highly desirable. In addition, the incumbent will have clinical responsibilities to the Medical Service, including preceptor to third year medical students and additional ad hoc clinical, teaching, and administrative assignments as may be required by the Chief of the Medical Service. The Brooklyn Campus of NYHHS is a major teaching affiliate of State University of New York Downstate Medical Center, and the successful candidate will be appointed at SUNY Downstate at an academic level commensurate his or her experience. The candidate must have completed three years of Internal Medicine training in an accredited program, as well as a fellowship in Cardiovascular Diseases.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel

  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
