The VA Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS) in Portland OR is currently seeking a dynamic and proven leader to join our team as the Chief of Radiology/Imaging. The Chief of Radiology/Imaging works closely with the Imaging Administrative Director and Chief Technologist to form the senior management team responsible for all operations of the Imaging service. This three-person leadership team is responsible for ensuring the highest quality Radiology services for military veterans.   This team develops policy and planning, timely budget formulation, efficient clinical performance and management of professional staff matters.  Performance in these areas will emphasize service, safety, quality, access, innovation, and efficiency of care delivery.  The Chief of Radiology/Imaging is expected to display leadership acumen sufficient to provide direction for complex programs in the delivery of care. The incumbent is expected to have strong interpersonal skills and demonstrate a commitment to an interdisciplinary approach to patient care delivery. VA Portland has been a national leader incorporating cutting edge equipment and procedures into their portfolio with early adoption of Spectral CT, Digital PET CT and 4D CT Angio as well as artificial intelligence.  The incumbent is expected to demonstrate the ability to coordinate a broad continuum of programs and demonstrate abilities to work well within a senior management team.

 

VAPORHCS is a major teaching site and research site closely affiliated with Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). VAPORHCS hosts about 2,000 health professional learners annually and ranks in the top 10 nationwide among VAs in research grant support, with over 170 investigators in basic science, clinical, and health services research and over 1000 active protocols. 

 

Radiology Provides patient centered, customer focused state of the art imaging services for the Portland VA Health Care System, a tertiary care medical center with campuses in Portland OR and subsidiaries in Vancouver, WA as well as 10 Outpatient care clinics across Central and NW Oregon. VA Portland HCS provides a full continuum of inpatient, outpatient, long-term, and emergent care, serving over 100K veterans per year. The Medical center is a Magnet Facility, 1A complex facility with tertiary care referrals and is also a major liver and renal transplant center and supports imaging for oncology diagnosis and treatment to include a high volume of Y-90 embolization’s in interventional radiology.  Portland supports a VA Shark Tank winning VISN-20 Centralized Lung Cancer Screening Program which is one of the top lung cancer screening programs in the entire VA.  VAPORHCS is a major teaching hospital with a strong affiliation to Oregon Health Sciences University with extensive research and Graduate Medical Education, including medical students, residents, and fellows with over $37M in grant funding. Imaging provides a whole spectrum of services: CT, MRI, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, nuclear medicine with PET/SPECT CT, conventional X-rays, special procedures, Interventional radiology, and neuroradiology.

 

The Chief of Radiology/Imaging is responsible for oversight of all 110 Staff to include Staff Radiologists, Nurses, Radiology Technologists, imaging support staff with additional Contract Radiologists. The radiology chief oversees the operation of interventional radiology,  neuroradiology, nuclear medicine as well diagnostic radiology services.  Imaging services are located on the Main Portland Campus as well as the CBOCs in Hillsborough, Salem and an outpatient imaging center in Vancouver, WA.  A new larger 14,000 sq foot outpatient imaging center is currently under construction in Vancouver and is slated to go operational late calendar year 2023.

 

We are seeking a Clinical Chief with a strong clinical, administrative, and academic background who will provide oversight of day-to-day operations, be clinically active, and collaborate in developing education and research with our academic partner. The incumbent is expected to demonstrate the ability to coordinate a broad continuum of programs and demonstrate abilities to work well within a senior management team.

 

The ideal candidate must be strongly motivated to promote continuing research activities and education for staff, inter-professional training, and be committed to professional enrichment, merit promotion, equal employment opportunity, and positive labor relations. An OHSU academic appointment will be commensurate with experience.

 

Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, (The Chief of Imaging is expected to be available by work cellphone for urgent or emergent issues 24/7 but does not have to take additional diagnostic radiology pager call or work the weekend or evening shifts).

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution

The Portland VA Medical Center (PVAMC) is a 303-bed consolidated facility with two main divisions. The medical center serves as the quaternary referral center for Oregon, Southern Washington, and parts of Idaho for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The Portland VAMC is located atop Marquam Hill on 28.5 acres overlooking the city of Portland.
