COMMUNITY DESCRIPTION

With a diverse and industrious population, Windsor Locks, Connecticut enjoys a reputation for combining cutting-edge innovation with hard work that began in 1827 when a group of Hartford merchants joined with 400 Irish laborers to build a canal bypassing the Connecticut River’s treacherous Enfield Rapids. That reputation endures today with some of the nation’s brightest minds working on NASA’s Orion Project to bring man to Mars. A major Northeastern distribution hub for American Honda, Federal Express, and UPS facilities, Windsor Locks is also home for aerospace products (Collins Aerospace, UTC) and specialty non-woven and paper goods (Ahlstrom-Munksjo).

Served by Interstate 91, which runs north to the Canadian border and south to Long Island Sound, Windsor Locks sits amidst The Knowledge Corridor and is equidistant between the cities of Hartford, CT and Springfield, MA. Just two hours from New York City and Boston, Windsor Locks is also just an hour’s drive from top Northeast ski resorts and beautiful beaches. Domestic and global air travel is available from Bradley International Airport, the Gateway to New England. Amtrak, rail freight, major bus lines and the Hartford Line commuter rail system also serve Windsor Locks.

More than anything else, Windsor Locks is a reflection of its citizens, and its native and adopted sons and daughters have distinguished themselves by their kindness, dedication and achievement. We have nurtured the nation’s first female Governor elected in her own right, won a Little League Baseball World Championship, and molded a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient.
