University Pediatrician's Autism Center (UPAC) is a therapeutic environment providing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services to clients with diagnoses of Autism between the ages of 0-21. The Autism center is a growing, face-paced environment in which flexibility and efficiency are necessary as we work as a team to provide high quality treatment to our clients. The Speech Pathologist will contribute to high quality services for clients diagnosed with autism and the overall functioning of the center. This role is an essential part of UPAC's commitment to maintaining quality and ethical service delivery. The Speech Pathologist will assess, plan, and implement therapeutic programs to help patients improve their communication skills and overall quality of life. Time will be spent conducting speech and language assessments and treatment as well as corresponding documentation and billing.
*Qualifications:*
* Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program
* Valid Michigan licensure as a Speech Language Pathologist
* Successful completion of clinical fellowship year, preferred
* Experience working with clients with Autism Spectrum Disorder in an ABA setting, preferred
*Supervisory Responsibilities:* None
*Required Expectations:*
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Ability to read, write, develop and interpret documents such as treatment plans, professional/research literature in speech, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
* Ability to speak effectively to groups and apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
* Ability to manage problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
*Job Responsibilities:*
1. Caseload management
* Manage a diverse caseload of clients who are receiving speech services
* Conduct appropriate client assessments utilizing strong knowledge in anatomy, physiology and medical terminology while incorporating assessment results and risk/barriers identified
* Provide direct, hands-on therapy for clients focusing on articulation, language development and cognitive communication skills
* Conduct client observations, monitor progress, and update treatment accordingly
* Facilitate active parent engagement through parent meetings and involvement
* Collaborate with school, UPAC team and other professionals
* Participate in IEP meetings to receive updated information when needed
2. Documentation expectations and billing per UPAC guidelines and policy
* Complete billing activities accurately and according to UPAC and contract guidelines
* Complete and sign supervision/soap note
* Ensure complete, accurate, and up to date client file documentation
* Ensure billing and client file management is complete within company policy deadlines
3. Availability
* Attend required staff meetings
* Employees are expected to be available to provide services during non-traditional work setting when needed during these non-traditional business hours. Employees should understand that their schedule could change based on company need.
4. Ethics
* Maintain ethical standards and service delivery best practices
* Follow ethical guidelines set forth by ASHA, the insurance providers, and UPAC
* Ongoing education and professional development to enhance skill development
* Maintenance of trainings, certificates and licenses to avoid lapse
*Working Conditions:*
* The treatment environment may be loud and active.
* Staff must be willing to work daytime and evenings as needed and one weekend per month.
* Staff must be willing to work in both center and home-based locations.
* Staff will provide physical care, support, guidance, and supervision of daily activities consistent with the treatment plan and ABA programming.
* Staff need to be physically and mentally flexible as things are constantly changing in this workplace.
* Staff must be able to lift up to 25 pounds, sit and stand for long periods, bend, kneel, crouch, run for short durations, and move between these actions readily.
* Staff will maintain a safe therapeutic environment for the client and their family.
* Staff will assist with physical management of clients. At times staff are required to lift a child and support clients ages 0-21 who have challenging and sometimes severe problem behavior.
* Staff will engage in physical activities that may include sitting and standing for long periods of time, getting up and down off the floor, running, and other physical activities related to play with children of all ages.
* Staff will assist with daily living activities that may include changing soiled clothing and diapers, and assisting clients with dressing, showering, brushing teeth, etc.
* Staff must also follow established policies and procedures to meet minimum life safety standards of JCAHO/OSHA and the Department of Human Services SOM Licensing.
* UP Autism Centers provide services, including home services to children with autism. The hours of operation are Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 8 p.m., and Saturday 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Employees are expected to be available to provide services in non-traditional work setting when needed during these non-traditional business hours. Employees should understand that their schedule could change based on company need.
This position is exempt from overtime pay provisions of the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act.
