Cancer Outreach and Research PA or NP full-time

Summary

University of Vermont Cancer Center seeking a community focused APP (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) with experience or interest in cancer research to join their Community Outreach and Engagement Team in a full-time capacity.

The successful provider will align with the UVM Cancer Center’s mission to reduce the burden of cancer by providing support for clinical research, patient care associated with clinical research, community education, and community outreach and engagement. Any practice of medicine shall be within the scope of practice based on education, training, and experience.

Key Responsibilities

This is a 1.0 FTE exempt position with the following general allocation of effort:

50% effort – in collaboration with the UVM Cancer Center’s community outreach and education team, leverage the new cancer outreach and education mobile van to distribute information and provide training about cancer prevention and screening, identify community resources for referral and participate in shared decision-making regarding cancer screening. Conduct skin checks to identify a need for dermatology or PCP referral, provide cancer screening materials (e.g. FIT tests, home HPV testing) and provide cancer prevention resources (e.g. HPV vaccines and nicotine replacement therapy). Efforts may also include participation in regional health fairs, intersection with rural primary care offices and providers, and representing the Cancer Center at regional conferences and other forums.

25% effort – community-based research focused on cancer survivorship, cancer screening, cancer genetic testing, pragmatic trial provision for cancer patients in rural communities, supportive care and cancer prevention.

25% effort – support of clinical trials through the UVM Cancer Center Clinical Trials Office at UVM Medical Center, primarily providing backup for clinical research coordinators and the Clinical Trials Office APP to assist with the care of patients enrolled on clinical trials.

Experience

  • 1 - 3 years clinical PA/NP experience required; previous experience with cancer patients desired.
  • Ideal candidates will have experience with clinical research protocols and compliance and/or a demonstrated desire to expand their skillset into a research capacity.
  • Experience and comfort with rural health care settings and patients is essential.
  • This position requires an experienced practitioner who exhibits a high degree of independence and clinical autonomy. New graduates are not able to be successfully supported in this role.

Education & Licensure

  • Masters or Doctorate Degree
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record required.
  • Must be licensed as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in both Vermont and New York states (or ability to obtain).
  • National certification from an approved certifying body is required:
    • PA: Completion of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) approved program (prior to January 2001 – Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs). Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required.
    • NP: Completion of a master's, post-master's, or doctorate from a nurse practitioner program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate of Nursing Education (CCNE) or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). Current certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or an equivalent body is required.
