Opportunity Details

The Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital, Columbia, MO is actively recruiting to fill Staff Certified Nurse Anesthetists (CNRA) opening.

The CNRA performs pre-anesthesia patient evaluations/histories, prepares anesthesia plans, delivers all forms of anesthesia, and follows up on anesthesia cases. The CRNA will consult and collaborate with the entire surgical care team. Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of anesthesia equipment.  Anesthesia Section comprises CRNA and Anesthesiologists. 100% supervised by a physician; 1-3 cases daily.  Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 6:45 a.m. – 3:15 p.m.

Duties of the position include:

  • Ability to translate the principles of professional nursing practice in the care of assigned patients to provide appropriate care.
  • Ability to perform a pre-anesthetic patient history and physical, which includes collecting pre-operative consults and data.
  • Ability to formulate an anesthetic plan and describe the anesthetic risks, benefits, and options to the patient.
  • Ability to administer inhalation, regional, intravenous, local, and topical anesthetics and to detect unfavorable reactions to continuously evaluate the patient's physical status.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies by providing airway management, administration of emergency fluids and drugs, and using appropriate resuscitation procedures for patient care.
  • Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary environment for improvement of services for patient care.
  • Ability to practice nurse anesthesia with colleagues and peers utilizing a collaborative team concept of anesthesia care.
  • Ability to perform IV's.

Provide anesthetic care for general surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology, diabetic foot and oral surgery in OR, PACU, ICU ward, and clinic settings. In addition, provide cardiac and open-heart cases. No trauma, No OB and kids.

The Anesthesiology Section serves patients across the spectrum of inpatient and outpatient care for more than 40,000 veterans in an area to include 43 counties in Missouri as well as Pike County, Illinois.

  • Must be U.S. Citizen.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice nursing.
  • Board Certification and Registered Nurse Anesthetist.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
