PeaceHealth is seeking an experienced Family Medicine Nurse Practitioner to join our team in Ketchikan, Alaska!

Ideal Candidate

 

  • Certified Family Medicine Nurse Practitioner with an interest in rural medicine
  • Post-training experience in a primary care setting preferred

PeaceHealth has been serving the communities of Southeast Alaska since 1923 with Ketchikan Medical Center, a 25-bed critical-access hospital offering comprehensive trauma care, outpatient and home health services, and a 29-bed long-term care facility. Primary and specialty medical care is provided by PeaceHealth Medical Group—Ketchikan and Prince of Wales Island. Our Trauma IV emergency department operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, staffed by physicians who are independent contractors employed by National Emergency Services (NES).

 

  • Guaranteed first-year income, based on a 1.0 FTE and years of direct experience (0-3, 3-5, 5-9, 10+): $145,808.00 - $184,371.00

Job Summary

Within scope of practice and in alignment with both hospital staff bylaws and PHMGs physician supervision expectations, responsible for advanced level of nursing evaluation, clinical assessment, prescribing and monitoring medications and follow-up care for patient. Responsible for patient and family teaching.

Essential Functions

 

  • Effectively identifies, evaluates, and addresses disease prevention and health promotion issues of the population in the practice while administering quality patient care.
  • Works in an independent and interdependent relationship with members of the medical staff, which allows for consultation, collaboration, or referral.
  • Gives directions to nursing and other staff.
  • Prescribes medications and treatments and ongoing medication management. Orders lab and diagnostic tests when appropriate and interprets test results.
  • Educates patients and/or families about preventive care, medical issues, and use of prescribed medical treatments and/or medications.
  • Maintains legible, accurate, and confidential medical records. Documents all medical evaluations, diagnoses, procedures, treatment, outcomes, education, referrals and consultations according to established standards.
  • Analyzes new knowledge gained from conferences, workshops, professional literature, or "hands-on training" and assimilates this knowledge into clinical practice.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Requires training in psychopharmacology.

Oregon West Network:

  • License as a PMHNP.

Oregon West Network – Wound and Ostomy:

  • Position will be primarily caring for outpatients.
  • Minimum of five years clinical experience required.
  • Wound care experience required.
  • CWOCN (Wound, Ostomy and Continence Certification) preferred. If not certified, must obtain CWCN (Wound Care Certification) within 6 months of hire and COCN (Ostomy Care Certification) within 18 months of hire.

Oregon West Network – Sacred Heart Medical Center – Neurohospitalist Nurse Practitioner:

  • Must complete at least eight hours annually of education and training related to the care of acute stroke patients.

Oregon West Network – Orthopedic Comprehensive Total Joint Care service

  • This position provides direct support to patients entering in to the orthopedic total-joint service line at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend, in direct collaboration with the orthopedic surgeons and other specialty disciplines, with the goal of optimizing the surgical episode of care for high surgical risk patients.

Palliative Care:

  • Supporting management of pain and other symptoms, assesses the impact of functional status on quality of life. Leads the conscious practice of cultural humility with the interdisciplinary team cultural assessment of patients. Leads care of the patient with serious illness, guiding the team through ethical principles to represent the patients’ preferences.
  • Effectively identifies, evaluates, and addresses disease process and symptom management of the patients in Palliative care.
  • Visits patients and families at their place of residence/clinic/acute care setting. Assesses condition, symptoms and manages patient’s condition related to palliative care.
  • Participates in case conferences and interdisciplinary team meetings.
  • Educates patients and/or families about symptom care.
  • Hospice and Palliative Care Certification for Nursing within 2 years of hire.
  • ANCC/AANP certification required. (ANP-Adult Nurse Practitioner; ARNP-Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, FNP-Family Nurse Practitioner or GNP-Geriatric Nurse Practitioner).

Cottage Grove:

  • May include providing services in a walk-in clinic. This position would need a FNP certification to serve all ages.

PHSW Psychiatry Clinic:

  • Provide advanced practice medical nursing services to patients on the inpatient and partial hospital psychiatric units including direct clinical assessment, general medical care and collaboration with multidisciplinary treatment team. Provide patient, family and staff education and consultation.

PHSW O/P Behavioral Health:

  • One year experience as an advanced practice psychiatric-mental health nurse preferred.

PHSW Heart & Vascular Ancillary:

  • Advanced nursing knowledge related to cardiovascular disease management in adults required.
  • Assess health status through obtainment of relevant health history, physical exam, preventative screening and identification of risk factors. Formulate appropriate differential diagnosis and identification of patient needs. Coordinate access for appropriate testing modalities (i.e. stress testing vs. CTA), to diagnose and direct plan of care to appropriate path for patient condition. May develop program guidelines, protocols, policies and procedures to facilitate organizational management of patient populations on cardiac and vascular-related topics. Participate as a clinical resource for nursing staff, physicians, hospital and other health care providers. Serve as an advocate for patients, staff and management. Assist in the assessment of clinical nurse performance and validates clinical competencies. Role model clinical expertise by educating community and hospital staff.

PHSW Pain Management:

  • Perform a focused physical assessment. Order and evaluate diagnostic and screening labs, tests and imaging studies. Manage basic care complications and medications as part of the pain management team.
  • Demonstrated success in improving patient outcomes related to chronic pain.
  • Extensive knowledge of psychological issues and expertise with counseling, limit setting and liaison work with health care providers.
  • Five years' advanced nursing practice in pain management preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in quality improvement and legislative change in area of pain management or either acute and/or chronic pain preferred.
  • Experience designing/implementing clinical trials or studies preferred

PHSW Palliative Care:

  • Experience dealing with terminally ill patients.
  • Valid driver's license with an automobile that is insured to state regulations and is in good running order.
  • Five years’ advanced nursing practice preferred.
  • Advanced Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (ACHPN) preferred.

PHSW Bariatric Center:

  • Proven ability to teach/train and advanced nursing knowledge related to weight management and diabetes.

PHSW Hospice Medicare Certified:

  • Valid driver's license with an automobile that is insured to state regulations and is in good running order.
  • Ability to provide advanced nursing knowledge related to hospice, adult medicine and the death and dying process.

UGMC Interventional and procedural imaging:

  • Primally caring for patients in the procedural imaging departments.
  • Expected to perform cardiac stress testing and serve as the interventional RN for procedural imaging, as well as PICC line placement and management.
  • Advanced nursing knowledge related to cardiovascular disease management.
  • ACLS required at date of hire and experience in procedural and imaging departments preferred.

 

Working Conditions

Lifting

 

  • Audiologist/Psychologist: Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Consistently operates computer and other medical equipment. Fine motor skills to be able to grasp and control medical equipment.
  • Midwife: Ability to move around area with occasional sitting. Patient handling no greater than 35 lbs. without the use of assistive equipment and/or devices. Lifting (non-patient) up to 20 lbs. Bending/ stooping/ squatting/ reaching kneeling frequently. Perform hands on CPR at least 20 mins using 100-125 lbs. of force (National Assoc. of EMS Physicians and AHA) Frequency should be seldom or occasionally.

 

Environmental Conditions

 

  • Midwife: Exposure to biohazard, body fluids and airborne particles.
  • Time spent on site in medical/hospital setting.

 

Mental/Visual

 

  • Vision and hearing required within normal limits (glasses, contacts, hearing aids permitted).
  • Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.
