Facts and Figures

Greenville was founded by John Green in 1844 and the city was incorporated as a village in 1867 and as a city in 1871. 

Greenville is significant because it is where the Meijer chain of stores was established. Meijer corporation now operates stores throughout the Midwest. 

Greenville has been known as the “Refrigerator Capital of the World” since the foundation of Ranney Refrigerator Co. in 1892 Over the years, it has been home to various refrigerator manufacturers, including Gibson, White Consolidated, Frigidaire, and, until recently, the Electrolux refrigerator factory.
