ResponsibilitiesThe Nurse Practitioner (NP) is responsible for utilizing training and skills to provide direct outpatient care under the supervision of a physician. The neurology NP is qualified to assess, diagnose, and treat disorders of stroke and vascular neurological. The NPs primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, performing clinic consultations for hospital follow-up post-stroke and TIA patients. Population includes patients that have previously received IV thrombolytic, mechanical thrombectomy, aneurysm embolization or other neurosurgical procedures.
Essential Key Job Responsibilities
- Obtain medical histories when necessary.
- Perform physical exams (within established protocol).
- Diagnose, treat and monitor acute and chronic diseases (within protocol guidelines).
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests.
- Prescribe or recommend medications for prescription for medications and treatment (within protocol guidelines).
- Responds to emergency situations in an appropriate manner.
- Promote positive lifestyle habits to all patients through education and counseling.
- Assure the supervising physician reviews and signs off 20% of charts.
- Maintain patient’s privacy and confidentiality.
- Work closely with other nurses to assure patient flow is efficient.
- Consult with the supervising doctor regarding patient symptoms to assure proper diagnosis and plan of treatment.
- Provide comprehensive teaching to patients and families.
- Responds to patient telephone calls (within clinic protocol timeframe)
- Adjudicates incoming referrals (within clinic protocol)
- Adjudicates ambulatory cardiac monitoring result reports (per written protocol)
- Communicates with referring providers, as necessary
- Reviews diagnostic testing results such as labs and imaging reports (within clinic protocol timeframe)
- Completes paperwork such as FMLA and disability requests (within clinic protocol timeframe)
- Oversees clinical data collection (ie for quality improvement or database reporting)
- Conducts relevant research.
- Participate in quality improvement.
- Attends meetings as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned
QualificationsRequired Education
- Graduate of a MSN Nurse Practitioner training Program
- Required Licensure and Certifications
- State APRN License required
- AHA BLS
Preferred Qualifications
- Two years experience as a full-time Nurse Practitioner, preferably in outpatient neurology / neurosurgery
