Physician Assistant, in collaboration and consultation with physicians, staff RNs and other health care professionals, provides holistic, compassionate care to Members and families. Physician Assistant practices within the context of collaborative management with a physician(s) in diagnosing, managing, and preventing acute and chronic illness and disease formulating and implementing comprehensive outcomes-based patient treatment plans, and promoting wellness.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assess the physical and mental condition of patients by performing and obtaining comprehensive or problem-focused physical examinations and medical histories.
  • Use sound medical decision-making skills within your appropriate scope of practice and in collaboration with your collaborating physician and others.
  • Orders, collects, interprets and evaluates laboratory and other diagnostic tests to assess patient problems and health care need, actions for follow-up, reconciles medications
  • Reviews and interprets the medical, surgical and social history of members, evaluates patient's response to health care provided and the effectiveness of care.
  • Prescribes, recommends and/or employs medical drug therapies or other forms of related therapeutic treatments and procedures or performs indicated procedures in accordance with approved policies with attention to efficacy, safety, and cost.
  • Counsels patients and families regarding medical processes, management of the health illness/condition, medication, nutrition, and health promotion. Counsels patients about drug regimens and possible side effects or interactions with other substances such as food supplements, over the counter medications and herbal remedies. 
  • Provides consultation level services for conditions/problems related to the Provider's specialty, level of experience and training.
  • Maintains appropriate records detailing the patient's treatment plans and outcomes. Initiates timely consultation and referral when the problem exceeds scope of practice and/or expertise. 
  • Manages patients in a healthcare setting(s) other than primary clinic setting (e.g., inpatient, emergency services, surgical, procedural, etc.)
  • Participates in all mandatory compliance and other training programs, seeks guidance for compliance-related concerns and adheres to all applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Refers members to PCP, case management, and disease management programs and other specialties as necessary
  • Practices in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal laws which govern confidentiality and medical information privacy regulations (HIPAA)
  • Office clinic schedule 3 days/week, either solo or shared schedule with the surgeon, including pre and post-operative care, new patient and follow-up patient evaluation and treatment
  • OR 2 days/week, including first-assist, orders, progress notes, operative reports, any additional paperwork as required
  • Casting, splinting, suturing/wound closure, joint aspirations/injections, surgical first-assist, including other minor independent procedures as delegated/approved by the collaborating surgeon
  • Participate/assist in office staff (LPN, MA, RN, front office staff) education, training, supervision

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to learn and properly use independently the required EHR
  • Must be able to demonstrate effective written communication skills including but not limited to writing reports and correspondence
  • Must be able to demonstrate effective verbal communication skills, including but not limited to speaking effectively to members, providers, families and staff and listening to members, providers and families
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, and use time effectively and efficiently.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working in an environment of change. Effectively copes with change and uncertainty; responds and "shifts gears" comfortably
  • Is dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of both external and internal customers, acts with customers in mind
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with customers, and gain their trust and respect

Baseline Clinical Knowledge

  • Minimum 2 years clinical experience as a Physician Assistant in clinical practice setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, diagnose and document chronic disease acute or chronic health episodes and challenges ins varying ages and stages of human development.
  • Proven ability to pursue feedback, continuing education and professional development
  • Ability to effectively reconcile medications
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and document the needs of clinically complex patients

Education

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant Program; Master's Degree preferred

Licensure/Certifications

  • Current or eligible for Missouri State Licensure, as well as BNDD licensure for prescriptive authority
  • Current American Heart Association or Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Current or eligible for Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) licensure

Travel Requirements: Travel required

  • Must meet company driving standards
  • Must have valid state driver's license and be able to drive a car
  • Must meet company's automobile liability insurance standards and provide proof of coverage
  • Must be able to independently travel to assigned locations

Physical and Psychological Demands:

  • Requires bending, stooping, twisting, kneeling, crouching, crawling and/or stretching from seated or standing positions
  • Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate medical equipment, computer tablet, computer keyboard, telephone, copier, calculator and other office equipment
  • Requires close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust visual focus, hearing and smelling
  • Must be able to communicate information via telephone or computer
  • Requires moderate to intense concentration due to complexity of the job
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to observe "Universal Precautions" for blood-borne pathogens and body fluids
