Advance Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), Psychiatry

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner functions as a provider for Mary and Elizabeth Hospital inpatient and outpatient (as needed) programs.  The psychiatric nurse practitioner functions in collaboration with the Mary and Elizabeth Hospital medical staff, other clinical providers, and administration to ensure quality care of inpatients and outpatients across the lifespan, with a primary focus in adult/geriatric populations.

This nurse practitioner will be supervised by UL Health employed physician (e.g., Chief Medical Officer) of Mary and Elizabeth Hospital to provide assessment, emergency/crisis management, and treatment for a range of psychiatric diagnoses. The APRN should demonstrate an advanced level of medical and nursing knowledge, timely and compliant documentation, clinical and technical competency, sound clinical judgment, flexibility to meet the evolving needs of hospital programs, and professionalism as it relates to interpersonal and general communication skills.

The APRN serves as a resource to educate patients, families, professional nurses, and staff and functions as a liaison between patients, families, and UofL Physicians staff. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will contribute to excellence in patient care, professional development, research, teaching, consulting and provide leadership within the organization and the nursing profession.

Education:

  • Master of Nursing degree from an accredited institution.

Licensure:

  • Current licensure in state of Kentucky as an APRN.

Certification:

  • National certification, preferably as Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Others will be considered on a case by case basis in relation to provider experience.

  • Current DEA certificate without restriction

  • Current BLS

Essential Functions:

  • Provide direct clinical services for psychiatric patients in collaboration with physicians.

  • Ensure inpatients on caseload are seen daily and/or coverage for caseload is arranged for anticipated time off.

  • Ensure outpatient caseload is seen according to defined regulatory frequency standards, at minimum.

  • Facilitates timely and appropriate admissions.

  • Assesses the physical and psychosocial status of clients by means of interview, health history, physical examination, medication reconciliation/review, and diagnostic studies for both inpatient and outpatient services.

  • Works in collaboration with a physician in formulating, initiating, and documenting treatment plan for psychiatric patients.

  • Assesses patients for change in status and institutes appropriate interventions; initiates necessary emergency interventions to stabilize patients.

  • Utilizes prescriptive privileges within the confines of Kentucky law.

  • Provides high quality patient/family-centered care by communicating effectively with patients and family members.

  • Serves as a clinical leader and expert to nursing staff and members of the multidisciplinary team.

  • Participates in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings and ensures appropriate, quality care involving patient input when possible.

  • Requests written consultation from physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate and quality patient care.

  • Relays appropriate information regarding patient care to the collaborating physician.

  • Evaluates the quality of care provided and recommends changes for improvement.

  • Initiates appropriate actions to facilitate the implementation of therapeutic plans that are consistent with the continuing healthcare needs of the patient.

  • Utilizes current research and evidenced-based-practice decision making in all clinical practice; incorporates clinical research findings in the development and implementation of standards of care.

  • Documents and reports care in an accurate, timely manner.

  • Works independently and effectively with others. Collaborates with other health disciplines to ensure continuity and quality of care.

  • Works varied schedule aligned with hospital needs and provider productivity standards, including participation in mutually agreed upon call and weekend rotation schedules. This includes timely responses to call when assigned.
