The main component of this position is First Assisting all specialties in our Surgical Suite. 
 
About the Role
 
We’re looking for a dedicated Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant for our Surgical First Assist position to join our team and help us continue delivering the level of care our patients and families deserve. In this role, you’ll be a vital part of our Surgical Services team, assisting across all surgical specialties, ensuring excellent service, collaboration, and patient outcomes in a fast-paced healthcare environment. The Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant serves as an additional patient care provider, augmenting and extending patient services provided by the health care team. The NP/PA will work closely with members of the team and have a reasonable amount of autonomy in the care and medical decision-making for patients.   
  • The Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA) serves as the point of contact in augmenting care needs and extending patient services provided by the health care team.  The APP will exercise his/her patient care and medical decision-making autonomy within established clinical parameters regulated by the New York Board of Health Professions. Utilizes advanced practice skills to ensure delivery and efficient care to surgical patients in the hospital. The APP will cross cover surgical specialties as needed.  
  • The APP will provide a range of diagnostic and therapeutic services including admission, evaluation, history and physical exams, diagnosis and evaluation relevant to proposed procedure, development of plan of care, intraoperative technique and expertise and postoperative care. All services will be provided under a collaborating or supervising Physician arrangement.
  • Incorporates appropriate assessment and intervention skills that are age-specific in all interventions and delivery of care.  
  • Participates in peri-operative patient management in collaboration with other health care providers.
  • Orders and reviews diagnostic tests. Identify, prescribe, and manage pharmacological therapies. Determines effectiveness of the plan of care through documentation of patient care outcomes. Reassesses and modifies plan of care as necessary to achieve medical and health goals. Makes referrals to other health professionals and community agencies. Admits/discharges to appropriate service. Participates in team meetings and conferences to enhance an interdisciplinary approach to health care delivery. Serves on departmental and multidisciplinary committees, which influence or determine policies affecting Advanced Practice Providers. Participates in and develops projects and quality improvement programs, as well as standards of care and practice. Maintains current level of knowledge relative to professional practice. Maintains all required professional documentation, such as license, certifications, infection control, ACLS/BLS, DEA, as well as system requirements. Acts as resource to staff and implements educational programs, as needed.
  • Consistently recognizes major illness and problems, referring to the proper source. Self-identifies and completes tasks deemed necessary, without initiation by physician.  Seeks counsel and direction as appropriate through a collaborative/supervisory relationship and effectively utilizes Provider/Surgeon as appropriate.  Clearly documents client encounters and evaluating plan appropriately.
  • Conducts all interactions in a confidential, courteous, professional and timely manner.  Recognizes and meets the needs of all customers, adapting communication style as necessary.  Facilitates a positive organizational image by providing favorable interaction in all customer contact.  Encourages the interaction of co-workers and associates by maintaining open and positive communication.  Recognizes and provides input regarding barriers to the effective delivery of services.  Shares knowledge and skills to assist everyone in the delivery of quality services.  Actively seeks conflict resolutions.
  • Establishes and maintains open lines of communication, both internal and external, to effectively represent department services. Serves as a role model for communication.  Identifies issues, resolve problems, and provides independent follow up.   Consistently demonstrates outstanding communication and take appropriate action.
  • Develop and maintain the knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal characteristics of all associates for the effective delivery of service to achieve organizational goals and objectives. Pursues advance training /certification.  Actively participates and promotes professional practice by participating in applicable committees. Facilitates/presents education programs.
  • Successfully completes scheduled education and development activities.  Applies newly acquired skills and competencies to improve the productivity of the work group.  Frequently takes the initiative to seek out additional educational opportunities to enhance their own self-development. Obtains documents and updates medical history. Identifies health risks and needs. Performs physical examinations and conducts preventive screening procedures based on age and history. Formulates a differential diagnosis and plan of care based on history, physical examination, and clinical findings. Identifies needs of the individual, family, or community.
Graduate of a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program, accredited by a credentialing center recognized by the Board of Health Sciences, e.g. American Nurses' Credentialing Center or the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. For Nurse Practitioners, RNFA is required. 
Master's level preparation preferred. 
Minimum of one (1) or two (2) years of Surgical Specialty or other specialty service preferred. 
  • License to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in New York State, prior to credentialing
