This is a full-time position consisting of four 8-hour shifts per week (day/evening/night).  The Emergency Mental Health Crisis Center is a special unit of Children’s Mercy Emergency Department specifically designed to care for children experiencing a behavioral health emergency. The therapeutic environment provides not only care, but assessment, treatment recommendations and care navigation for a family in crisis.

 

The Emergency Mental Health Crisis Center is within the Children’s Mercy Adele Hall Emergency Department. This is a new, fully staffed zone of the ED, including screening, assessment, triage, referral, care coordination, and short-term stabilization. The crisis center will include 4 safe rooms, 5 consult rooms, 5 observation beds, and 2 triage rooms.

 

The Children’s Mercy Division of Emergency Medicine provides the highest level of care to sick and injured children and adolescents in the Kansas City region. The APP will provide autonomous direct patient management, with the ability to collaborate with physicians of emergency medicine and psychiatry. Responsibilities include completing thorough history and physical assessments, ordering/interpreting lab tests, developing differential diagnosis, implementing plans of care, and coordinating the disposition process. The Behavioral Health Crisis Center APP will be expected to work effectively with the medical team by communicating clearly with families, working well with physicians and physician trainees, being a resource for nursing staff, and collaborating with multiple subspecialties that function in the emergency department.

 

The Advanced Practice Provider I (APP-I) provides comprehensive, evidence-based advanced practice to address the physiologic, psychosocial, and developmental needs of patients and families within the framework of the collaborative practice agreement. The APP-I participates in beginning leadership, evidenced-based practice/ research, and organizational development activities with the support and direction of an experienced APP mentor.

Clinical Practice: competently provides comprehensive, evidence-based advanced practice nursing care to address the physiologic, psychosocial, and developmental needs of patients and families within the framework of the collaborative practice agreement.

Professional Practice: actively participates in beginning leadership, evidenced-based practice/research, and organizational development activities with the support and direction of an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse mentor.

 

Education

• Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies, Family Nurse Practitioner, or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner required
• Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) preferred
• 1–2 years of pediatric experience preferred
  Exceptions may be considered based on specialty experience

Licensure

All licenses must be obtained by the time of hire; not required at time of application

• Missouri RN & APRN or PA license – required upon hire
• Kansas RN & APRN or PA license – required upon hire
• Active RN & APRN Compact License (for states outside MO & KS) – required upon hire

Certifications

• National board certification aligned with population and practice setting (per APRN Roles & Practice Setting policy) — required upon hire
• Completion of one of the following national certifications — required upon hire:
  • Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (CPNP)
  • Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)
  • Certified Physician Assistant (PA?C)
• Required APP life support certifications (BLS, ACLS, PALS as appropriate) — required upon hire
• Specialty certification relevant to the unit’s patient population — preferred
