Overview

As a sickle cell advanced practice provider (APP), the APPs primary focus is providing specialized, family-centered care for children and adolescents living with sickle cell disease (SCD). This role supports comprehensive disease management in the outpatient clinic. The APP functions as an independent and collaborative provider within an interdisciplinary team to improve health outcomes, reduce complications, and support the long-term well-being of patients with SCD. The outpatient sickle cell APP is expected to work effectively with the medical team by communicating clearly with families, working well with other providers, being a resource to nursing staff, and collaborating with multiple subspecialities. We are looking for candidates who have a passion for patient care, teamwork, and an enthusiasm to grow their advanced practice career caring for the pediatric sickle cell disease population.

The APP has a variety of roles providing outpatient management of SCD. The APP sees patients independently and in conjunction with physicians in our clinic. This includes performing comprehensive health assessments and ongoing management of patients with SCD. The APP will evaluate, diagnose, and treat both acute and chronic complications of SCD, review labs and radiologic imaging, initiate and monitor disease-modifying therapies, chronic transfusions, and patient education. These encounters build a holistic relationship of trust that are vital to the patient’s overall health outcomes. Furthermore, this team collaborates as needed with the inpatient hematology team to provide guidance and recommendations for hospitalized SCD patients. This role is immensely rewarding as the APP develops relationships with colleagues, patients, and families!

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse I (APRN-I) provides comprehensive, evidence-based advanced practice nursing to address the physiologic, psychosocial, and developmental needs of patients and families within the framework of the collaborative practice agreement. The APRN-I participates in beginning leadership, evidenced-based practice/ research, and organizational development activities with the support and direction of an experienced APRN mentor.

At Children’s Mercy, we are committed to ensuring that everyone feels welcomed within our walls. A successful candidate for this position will join us as we strive to create a workplace that reflects the community we serve, as well as our core values of kindness, curiosity, inclusion, team and integrity.

Additionally, it’s important to us that we remain transparent with all potential job candidates. Because we value the safety of the patients and families we serve, as well as the Children’s Mercy staff, we want to let you know that the seasonal influenza vaccine is a condition of employment for all employees in our organization. If you are selected for this position, you will be asked to supply your immunization records as proof of vaccination.
