Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant for Cardiology, Dysautonomia

Job Description:

The University of Toledo Physicians are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join our multidisciplinary Dysautonomia Program. This provider will evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients with autonomic nervous system disorders such as Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), neurocardiogenic syncope, and orthostatic hypotension. The role requires strong clinical judgment, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a patient-centered approach to managing complex, chronic conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct detailed patient histories and physical exams with a focus on autonomic dysfunction.
  • Order, interpret, and integrate diagnostic testing including tilt table tests, ECGs, autonomic function testing, QSART, echocardiograms, and labs.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans utilizing pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic strategies.
  • Educate patients and families on disease management, lifestyle modifications, and long-term expectations.
  • Collaborate with cardiology, neurology, electrophysiology, physical therapy, behavioral health, and other specialties for coordinated care.
  • Participate in autonomic testing clinics; assist with interpretation and documentation within scope of practice.
  • Document all patient interactions and treatment plans in the EPIC electronic health record system.
  • Support clinical research, data collection, and quality improvement initiatives as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the development of clinical protocols and serve as a resource for staff education.
  • May assist in onboarding and precepting APP students or new providers.

Minimum Requirements:

Education & Licensure:

  • Master’s or Doctorate degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant Studies.
  • Current licensure as an NP or PA in the State of Ohio (or eligible to obtain).
  • National certification (AANP, ANCC, or NCCPA).
  • BLS and ACLS certification.

Experience:

  • Minimum 2–3 years of clinical experience in dysautonomia.
  • Prior experience with autonomic disorders, syncope management, or complex chronic care preferred.
  • Experience with EPIC or similar electronic medical record systems.

Clinical Knowledge & Skills:

  • Understanding of autonomic nervous system disorders (e.g., POTS, neurocardiogenic syncope, orthostatic hypotension).
  • Familiarity with related comorbidities such as EDS, ME/CFS, MCAS, and deconditioning.
  • Competence in interpreting cardiovascular and autonomic diagnostic studies.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to provide compassionate care and manage patients with chronic, fluctuating symptoms.
