Position Summary
The Neurology Advanced Practice Provider (APP) functions as an integral member of the neurology care team, providing comprehensive inpatient care across the Neurology Consult Service and the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU). This role includes evaluation, diagnosis, and management of patients with a wide range of neurologic conditions, with a focused emphasis on seizure disorders and epilepsy. The APP collaborates closely with attending neurologists, residents, nursing, and interdisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care.
Primary Responsibilities
Neurology Consult Service
- Perform initial and follow-up neurologic evaluations for inpatient consults across medical services, surgical service, and critical care settings
- Obtain detailed neurologic histories and perform comprehensive neurologic examinations
- Formulate differential diagnoses and implement management plans under attending physician supervision
- Order and interpret diagnostic studies including laboratory tests, neuroimaging, and EEG results
- Document consult notes and daily progress notes in the electronic medical record
- Communicate recommendations clearly to primary teams and coordinate ongoing care
- Participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds and handoffs
- Educate patients and families on their child's neurological condition
Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU)
- Provide ongoing clinical management of patients admitted for long-term video EEG monitoring
- Management of patients in the EMU for spell capture, seizure characterization, anti-seizure medication titration or wean, and presurgical epilepsy evaluation
- Assist with antiepileptic medication adjustments, seizure provocation protocols, and rescue therapy as indicated
- Respond to seizure events and collaborate with EMU nursing and EEG technologists during monitoring
- Review EEG findings with attending epileptologists and incorporate results into care plans
- Educate patients and families regarding epilepsy, seizure safety, and treatment plans
- Support discharge planning and ensure appropriate outpatient follow-up
Additional Responsibilities
- Collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, EEG technologists, pharmacists, social work, and case management.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, patient safety efforts, and service development
- Provide patient and family education regarding neurologic conditions and treatment plans
- Serve as a clinical resource for hospital staff regarding neurologic concerns
- Precept or educate learners as appropriate (APP students, residents, new APPs)
Qualifications
Required
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program
- Current OH licensure (or eligibility) as a PA or NP
- National certification (NCCPA, AANP, or ANCC as applicable)
- BLS, ACLS and PALS required
- Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic reasoning, and communication skills
Preferred
- Experience in neurology, epilepsy, or acute care medicine
- Acute care NP certification for nurse practitioners (if applicable)
- Ability to function independently while collaborating within a team-based model
Work Environment & Schedule
- Inpatient hospital-based position
- Coverage includes Neurology Consult Service and EMU
- Schedule includes 3–12-hour, day shift coverage of weekday, weekends (every other), and holidays
- Orientation will be 5 days a week for the 1st 4 months (8a-5pm)
