Job Summary

The Physician Assistant – Medical Specialty is a licensed, certified, non-physician healthcare provider delivering direct patient care in an outpatient digestive disease (gastroenterology) setting. This Advanced Practice Provider (APP) practices with delegated prescriptive authority and is credentialed as an independent provider.

This role focuses on the evaluation and management of patients with gastrointestinal conditions, working collaboratively with supervising physicians and interdisciplinary care teams to provide high-quality, evidence-based care.


Essential Functions of the Role

  • Perform comprehensive or focused patient assessments, including medical histories and physical examinations
  • Diagnose and manage acute and chronic gastrointestinal conditions in an outpatient setting
  • Order, collect, interpret, and evaluate laboratory and diagnostic tests
  • Develop and implement evidence-based treatment plans
  • Prescribe medications and recommend therapeutic interventions in accordance with scope of practice
  • Perform procedures as appropriate to specialty and training, following established protocols
  • Educate patients and families on diagnoses, treatments, medications, nutrition, and preventive care
  • Counsel patients on medication use, including potential side effects and interactions
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete medical documentation
  • Initiate referrals or consultations when patient needs exceed scope of practice
  • Provide specialty-level consultation services based on training and experience
  • Support care across settings when needed (e.g., clinic, procedural areas, limited inpatient support if required)
  • Participate in extended or adjusted schedules as needed for patient care coverage

Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program

Experience:

  • Prefer more than 1 year of experience (gastroenterology or outpatient specialty experience preferred)

Certification & Licensure:

  • Current Physician Assistant license in the State of Texas
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire or transfer

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Full-Time, Exempt position
  • Day shift schedule
  • No routine travel required
  • Direct patient care role in an outpatient specialty clinic

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE/REGISTRATION

  • Basic Life Support (BLS): Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire or transfer.
  • Physician Assistants (PA): Must have a PA license through the state of TX.
