Acute Care Nurse Practitioner - The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center

The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) is seeking an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) to join a multidisciplinary team responsible for the care of complex trauma patients.

Working at the Shock Trauma Center, you will become a vital part of a high-acuity trauma team that provides continuity of care for patients from admission through discharge and post-discharge follow-up. The ACNP collaborates closely with nurses, therapists, residents, fellows, attending physicians, and students to ensure safe, timely, and evidence-based care for patients with a wide spectrum of traumatic injuries and complex medical comorbidities.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive assessments, develop and implement treatment plans for critically ill and injured trauma patients
  • Manage patients in high-acuity settings including ICU, step-down, and acute care units
  • Perform procedures within scope of practice (e.g., central line placement, arterial lines, chest tubes, etc., based on competency)
  • Participate in trauma resuscitations and rapid response situations
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes
  • Provide patient and family education and support throughout the continuum of care
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record



Work Experience

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree from an accredited Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program
  • Current certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP-BC or AGACNP-BC)
  • Active Maryland RN and APRN licensure (or eligibility for licensure)
  • DEA certification (or eligibility)
  • BLS and ACLS certification
  • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in acute care, critical care, or trauma setting preferred
  • Strong clinical decision-making skills in high-pressure environments
  • Proficiency in managing critically ill patients with complex conditions
  • Experience with bedside procedures and invasive monitoring preferred
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills within interdisciplinary teams
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple patients in a fast-paced environment
  • Commitment to evidence-based practice and continuous professional development
