About the Opportunity

Join a growing hepatology program with one of Iowa's leading healthcare systems! UnityPoint Health is seeking an experienced Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join its multidisciplinary Center for Liver Disease in Des Moines, Iowa.

This is an outstanding opportunity to build a rewarding career in a highly specialized outpatient practice while working alongside experienced hepatologists and a collaborative care team. You'll care for patients with a wide range of liver conditions—including cirrhosis, viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, autoimmune liver disorders, and pre- and post-liver transplant patients—while making a meaningful impact on their long-term health and quality of life. Following onboarding, providers typically see 12-15 patients per day, depending on patient complexity.

Position Highlights

• 100% outpatient practice
• Monday-Friday schedule (8:00 AM-4:30 PM)
• No nights or weekends
• Collaborative team of hepatologists, APPs, nursing, and support staff
• Monthly outreach clinic opportunities
• Epic electronic medical record
• Opportunity to develop expertise in a growing specialty

Responsibilities

• Evaluate and manage new and established patients with liver disease
• Develop individualized treatment plans and provide ongoing care
• Order and interpret laboratory studies, imaging, and diagnostic testing
• Manage hepatology-specific medications and monitor treatment response
• Educate patients and families on liver disease management and lifestyle modifications
• Coordinate multidisciplinary care for medically complex patients
• Participate in transplant evaluations and post-transplant follow-up, as applicable
• Support quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based care pathways
• Document patient care accurately within Epic EMR

Qualifications

• Licensed Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in Iowa (or eligible for licensure)
• Minimum of two years of experience in gastroenterology, hepatology, internal medicine, or a related specialty preferred
• Experience managing medically complex patients in an outpatient setting
• Excellent communication, critical thinking, and patient education skills
• Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
• Epic experience preferred
