Position Overview:

The Advanced Practice Provider for OB Triage is responsible for promoting efficient throughput in the obstetrics triage care delivery area.  Important tools required for this position include 1) the ability to promptly recognize and initially manage maternal or fetal emergencies that present for evaluation in the unit, 2) effectively communicate timely patient status to referring providers, patients and their families 3)comprehensive documentation of clinical care provided to patients to facilitate quality care and timely charge capture 4) collaboratively implement evidence-based clinical protocols, and process improvement tools required to deliver and advance care in the OB Triage area, and 5) engage providers as needed to assist in the timely triage of OB patients that present for care.

The advanced practice provider is a key member of perinatal quality team, is supported by the OB/Gyn Hospitalist and facilitates triage of all patients presenting for assessment to the unit.   Measures of success for this role includes: timely turnaround times that promote throughput on our labor and deliver unit, prompt recognition of emergency conditions and initiation of anti-hypertensives, antibiotics and other therapies as required by clinical conditions, and prompt disposition of patient presenting for Obstetrical Care.

Key relationships would include: 

Director of Perinatal Operations, Labor and Delivery Director of Nursing, OB/Gyn Hospitalists, Laborists, OB/Gyn Residents, Emergency Department Personnel and other APP’s

Essential Job Duties:

  1.  Evaluate and address medical problems specific to obstetric care, Antenatal testing and ultrasound appropriate for diagnostic assessment of fetal well being
  2. First assist in C-sections if required to do so emergently.
  3. Effectively request consultation of other specialties when indicated,
  4. Demonstrates competence and skill while performing in the OB triage unit
  5. Demonstrates knowledge of and competency in the management of basic obstetrical and postpartum emergencies and complications. 
  6. Create diagnostically appropriate treatment plans,
  7. Document and operationalize all medical evaluations, history, physical, diagnostic labs, imaging and procedures, treatments, outcomes, and referrals consistent with The Joint Commission, state regulatory standards, and evidence-based standards of care. Maintains documentation compliant with current coding and billing.
  8. Functions professionally on an interdisciplinary team including nursing, residents, OB/Gyns, midwives and other advanced practice providers.
  9. Utilizes appropriate chain-of-communication and communicates with specialties, including other APP’s, Medical directors, and nursing using TEAMSTEPPS principles.
  10. Facilitates excellence in quality assurance and the delivery of patient care as part of our High Reliability Organization.
  11. Define, promote and model best practice in clinical operations that optimizes clinical space and personnel for efficient triage workflows.
  12. Provides optimal quality of patient care while following safety guidelines
  13. Contributes to cohesive group relations; uses open communication to resolve problems in and between departments.
  14. Demonstrates commitment to professional department and organizational core values.

 

Educational / Experience Requirements:

  • PAs: Bachelor’s degree, graduation from an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program, and certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician’s Assistants are required. Candidate must hold an active Maryland license through the Maryland Board of Physicians.
  • NPs: Bachelor’s degree, RN experience, and completion of Acute Nurse Practitioner degree. Candidate must hold an active Maryland license through the Maryland Board of Nursing.
  • One year of OBGYN, surgical, emergency, or critical care experience is preferred.
  • Credentialing must be obtained from Luminis Health Medical Staff Office and maintenance of BLS /ACLS/EFM certification is required.
  • The applicant must have an PA-C, NP or CNM certification.

Required License/Certifications:

  • Licensed to practice in the State of Maryland and Board Certified.

There is a reasonable expectation that employees in this position will be exposed to blood-borne pathogens.

Pay Range

$95,014.40 - $208,104 USD
