As an Emergency Medicine resident, you’ve dedicated yourself to building a career that will save lives. The U.S. Army Financial Assistance Program (FAP) offers a unique opportunity to reduce your financial burden during residency while setting the stage for a rewarding medical career with substantial long-term benefits.
What is the Financial Assistance Program (FAP)?
The FAP is designed to provide significant financial support during your residency, ensuring you can focus on your education without the added stress of financial concerns.
FAP Benefits During Residency:
- $45,000 Annual Grant — Paid directly to you
- $2,870 Monthly Stipend — Supporting your living expenses ($34,440 annually)
- 100% Reimbursement for all required tuition, fees, books, and equipment
Total Annual Financial Support During Residency:
- Estimated Total Annual Compensation During Residency: ~$79,440
- Full Reimbursement for Tuition, Fees, Books, and Equipment
Residency Requirement:
- Participants are required to complete 14 days of active-duty training annually during residency.
Post-Residency Commitment and Benefits
Upon completing your residency, you’ll enter the Army healthcare community as a Captain (O-3) with extensive financial incentives and comprehensive benefits:
Post-Residency Financial Compensation:
- Starting Base Pay: $63,972 annually
- Housing Allowance (BAH - Example for Nashville): $32,832 annually
- Subsistence Allowance (BAS): $3,849 annually
- Board Certification Pay (BCP): $8,000 annually
- Special Pay: Up to $49,000 annually
- Accession Bonus: $100,000 (First-year payout as part of a $400,000 total bonus)
Estimated Total Annual Compensation Post-Residency:
- ~$257,653
Post-Residency Commitment (Active-Duty Obligation):
In exchange for these exceptional benefits, participants will incur:
- A minimum two-year active-duty obligation for one year of FAP participation
- An additional six months of active duty for every additional six months of FAP participation
