Mission or goal of unit: The mission of the VCU Division of Cardiothoracic surgery is to both provide the Mid-Atlantic’s most advanced, patient-oriented, cost-effective and safe cardiothoracic services, as well as to create the finest training environment for the region’s future cardiothoracic specialists. The current environment increasingly mandates leading both regional and national quality initiatives in cardiothoracic surgery. 

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal:  This position will serve as the Surgical Director for Lung Transplant Surgery. The ideal candidate would have a national reputation and a proven track record of leading key programs. They should be a master surgeon with unique skills in lung transplantation. This is a key leadership role within the department of surgery and with the VCU Pauley Heart Center (ranked #1 in Virginia) and VCU Hume-Lee Transplant Center (performing over 500 solid organ transplants per year).

Responsibilities:

1.  Teaching: Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in Cardiothoracic Surgery, CT surgery residents, general surgery residents as well as medical and undergraduate students. Must be able to mentor cardiothoracic fellows with graded surgery responsibilities.

2. Research: Clinical research and trial participation is required. Opportunities for intramural and extramural funding will be explored with a goal towards extramural funding in collaboration with basic science faculty in Surgery, Pauley Heart Center, Massey Cancer Center and School of Medicine.   

3. Service:  Faculty member will serve on departmental, College, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc. Clinical responsibilities may be extended to a shared time between VCU and VA Medical Centers.

4. Other:  This role has dedicated time for administrative aspects of leading the lung transplant program.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Board Certified in Thoracic Surgery
  • Virginia state licensure
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with high emotional intelligence
  • Ability to function in a complex matrixed environment
  • Effective skills in managing conflict
  • Commitment to clinical excellence, education and clinical research
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
