Join the United States Army Medicine team as a General Surgeon. As a general surgeon and officer on the U.S. Army healthcare team, you will be at the forefront of advanced surgical procedures, work in state-of-the-art medical facilities with some of the most innovative equipment used in your specialty. You will lead a well-trained surgical team who examine, diagnose and evaluate a course of surgeries and treatments for a diverse patient base, while feeling none of the distractions found in a civilian practice, such as office management, malpractice or overhead. If you choose the Army Reserve, you can continue to work in your community and serve when needed. For either path you choose, you will work as a part of a multidisciplinary team, surrounded by dedicated professionals who share your values and a passion for excellence.

Benefits Include

Active Duty (Full-Time)

  • Loan Repayment: $120,000 in student loan repayment in $40,000 annual payments to qualifying federal student loans paid directly to the lending institution through the Active Duty Health Professions Loan Repayment Program (ADHPLRP).
  • Sign-on Bonus: $600,000 signing bonus for 4 years of service.
  • Incentive Pay: $52,000 paid annually for each successful year of service. Must have completed residency program in your specialty. $8,000 additional annual bonus as long as board certification maintained.
  • Location: Over 40 locations stateside and several more overseas, including Hawaii, Alaska, Italy, Germany, and Korea.

Army Reserve (Part-Time - 38 days a year)

  • Loan Repayment: $250,000 in student loan repayment in $40,000 annual payments to qualifying federal student loans paid directly to the lending institution through the Health Professions Loan Repayment Program (HPLRP).
  • Sign-on Bonus: $75,000 annual signing bonus for 2, 3, or 4 years of service.
  • Incentive Pay: $57,000 annual allotment for each successful year of service. Must have completed residency program in your specialty. $8,000 additional annual bonus as long as board certification maintained.
  • Location: Continue your civilian occupation serving time at a local unit within 50 miles of your location. Transition to different locations as needed.

  • Insurance: Low cost comprehensive healthcare and dental plans for you and your family.
  • Travel Opportunities: Activate to conduct tour to include humanitarian missions.

Requirements include

  • Doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy degree from an accredited U.S. school of medicine or osteopathy; foreign graduates may apply if they have a permanent certificate from the Educational Council of Foreign Medical Graduates.
  • Be within acceptable age (under 50) and physical requirements for military service.
  • Current license to practice medicine in the United States, District of Columbia or Puerto Rico.
  • U.S. citizenship or Permanent Residence (Reserve only).
