The Birmingham VA Health Care System is adding Family Medicine or Internal Medicine physicians to our Primary Care team. Openings include our clinic in Gadsden, AL.

The Birmingham VA Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama is seeking full-time primary care physicians to support our Veteran population. The preferred candidate will be board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine.

You will join a team providing compassionate General Internal Medicine/Family Medicine healthcare. The panel of patients will include both male and female veterans with acute and chronic illnesses. You will also be a participant in implementing/sustaining the VA Patient Centered Medical Home Model called Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT). Panel size at 1200. There is no on-call involved.

Additionally, the physician will work closely with our team of dedicated health care professionals to assure compliance with rational, regional, and local VA performance standards, and may serve on local committees as deemed necessary in support of the facility's mission.

Hours: Monday – Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm or a 4-day 10-hour schedule can be discussed. Possible flex schedule.

Key Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must be B/E or B/C in Internal or Family Medicine
  • Must have full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in ANY U.S. State

Paid Time Off:

  • 26 Days paid annual (vacation/personal) leave – you can carry over up to 86 days into a new year
  • 13 Days paid sick leave each year with no limit on accumulation – unused sick leave can be used to extend creditable service time at retirement!

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution

EDRP Authorized: Up to $40,000 a year, up to 5 years.

Facility Information:

The Birmingham VA Medical Center (BVAMC) is a 313-bed acute tertiary care facility located in the historic Southside district of the city. The facility provides acute tertiary medical and surgical care to Veterans of Alabama and surrounding states. The medical center serves as a referral center for this population area with 139 operating beds currently. Recent construction provides state-of-the-art facilities and equipment in all clinical programs. Care is provided in practically all medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties. Most staff physicians have joint appointments with VA and its primary affiliation, University of Alabama at Birmingham. The BVAMC operates nine Community Based Outpatient Clinics in North Alabama.
