Optometrist - Ophthalmology Opportunity in Kansas City

The Department of Ophthalmology at The University of Kansas Health System is seeking a full-time Optometrist to join our growing team. This faculty position offers a balanced blend of clinical care, teaching, and research, with opportunities tailored to the candidate’s background, interests, and academic goals.

The successful candidate will provide comprehensive optometric care for patients of all ages and will play an active role in the department’s educational mission. Responsibilities include supervising and teaching medical students and residents in both clinical and didactic settings. Involvement in community outreach, including participation in JayDoc clinics, is also expected.

Faculty members are encouraged to maintain a strong commitment to patient-centered care and uphold professional standards, as reflected in patient experience outcomes. Additional responsibilities include service on departmental and institutional committees, as well as participation in academic and administrative activities within the School of Medicine. Engagement in clinical research and scientific presentations at regional and national conferences is strongly supported. Clinical service may also extend to the VA Medical Center and other affiliated clinical sites through existing health system partnerships.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Optometry Degree (OD) from an Accredited School of Optometry
  • Board certification or eligibility in Optometry
  • Eligibility for medical licensure in Kansas

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with fitting and care coordination of medically necessary contact lenses
  • Managing post-operative care for specialty surgeons as needed
  • Academic experience with a strong interest in teaching and research
  • Proven ability to develop and grow independent research programs, including securing funding from public and private sources
