Help Lead a New Era of Cancer Care in West Texas
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) and University Medical Center (UMC) in Lubbock, Texas, are actively recruiting adult Medical Oncologists to join our expanding oncology program at the brand-new UMC Cancer Center. We are building a comprehensive team of specialists and generalists to advance cancer care, research, and education across the region.

Current Needs:

  • Disease-Specific Oncologists:

    • Breast Cancer (2 positions)

    • Lung Cancer (1 position)

    • Colorectal Cancer (1 position)

    • We are open to discussions with any solid tumor-focused specialists

  • General Medical Oncologists:

    • 2–3 positions available

    • Ideal for those seeking a broad-spectrum practice with an academic affiliation

Practice Highlights:

  • Academic appointment with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center

  • Faculty physicians will provide clinical care at the new, state-of-the-art UMC Cancer Center

  • General oncologists work 9 half-days per week, closely resembling a private practice schedule

  • Disease-specific specialists work 5 half-days per week, with the remaining time protected for research, teaching, or academic activities

  • Collaborative, multidisciplinary cancer care model

Candidate Profile:

  • Board-Certified or Board-Eligible in Medical Oncology

Position Tracks:

Clinical Track

  • Focus: Direct patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Schedule: Eight half-days per week at UMC Cancer Center outpatient clinic, with additional inpatient Hem/Onc consults as needed.
  • Responsibilities: Primary focus on high-quality patient care with the option to engage in peer-reviewed research and clinical trials.

Academic Track

  • Focus: A blend of clinical care, teaching, and research with a commitment to education.
  • Teaching Opportunities: Supervise and mentor residents and fellows, lead educational conferences, and support curriculum development.
  • Schedule: A minimum of 3-4 half-days per week at UMC Cancer Center outpatient clinic, with additional inpatient coverage as needed. The remaining half-days could be spent teaching, researching, or other academic endeavors.
  • Research Engagement: Conduct and publish clinical research and take advantage of opportunities for research leadership within TTUHSC’s academic framework.

Qualifications:

Required for Both Tracks

  • MD/DO or MBBS
  • Eligible for Texas Medical License
  • Board Eligible in Hematology and/or Oncology (or in the process of completing a fellowship)

Preferred

  • Board Certified in Hematology and/or Oncology
  • Active Texas Medical License

The facility emphasizes multidisciplinary, patient-centered care with disease-specific tumor boards and dedicated nurses and financial navigators to support patients.

The center also offers an after-hours Symptom Management Clinic for patients, helping reduce ER visits. With a strong academic focus, the cancer center provides extensive teaching and research opportunities, including clinical trials and educational leadership roles. Expansion plans aim to enhance access to specialized care, making it a crucial resource for both West Texas and Eastern New Mexico.
