Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the VCU Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is to both provide the Mid-Atlantic’s most advanced, patient-oriented, cost-effective and safe cardiothoracic services, as well as to create the finest training environment for the region’s future cardiothoracic specialists. The current environment increasingly mandates leading both regional and national quality initiatives in cardiothoracic surgery. The division is committed to enhance diversity among its faculty staff and students.

Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is seeking a cardiothoracic surgeon who will fulfill several urgent needs of this division. Duties will include clinical responsibilities in all areas of advanced thoracic & foregut surgery. Specific expertise in minimally invasive thoracic surgery, surgery for esophageal diseases as well as advanced endoscopy desired.

Position Responsibilities: 

Teaching | Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in cardiothoracic surgery CT surgery residents, general surgery residents as well as medical and undergraduate students.

Research | Clinical research will be strongly encouraged.  Opportunities for intramural and extramural funding will be explored with a goal towards extramural funding.  Collaboration with basic science faculty in School of Medicine will be encouraged.   Candidates with established funding will be strongly preferred.

Service | Faculty member will serve on departmental, College, and/or University committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, e.g., reviewer, conference organizer, etc. Their clinical responsibilities may be extended to a shared time between VCU and VA Medical Centers.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Board Certified/Eligible in Thoracic Surgery
  • Virginia state licensure
  • Training in minimally invasive and robotic thoracic/esophageal surgery ideal
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with high emotional intelligence
  • Commitment to clinical excellence, education and clinical research
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Research Interests in Cardiothoracic disorders that can lead to intramural and extramural funding
