Job Description:

The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) in Reno, Nevada is seeking a dedicated and skilled Pulmonary/Critical Care Physician to join our medical team. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive care to our veteran population, including the diagnosis, treatment, and management of pulmonary conditions and critical care needs.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide expert clinical care in both pulmonary and critical care settings.
• Perform and interpret diagnostic tests, such as pulmonary function tests, sleep studies, and imaging studies.
• Conduct patient assessments, develop treatment plans, and provide follow-up care.
• Manage patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), including those requiring mechanical ventilation and other advanced respiratory support.
• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, case reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Educate and mentor residents, fellows, and medical students.
• Engage in research and scholarly activities, as appropriate.

Qualifications:

• Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution.
• Completion of an accredited Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship program
• Unrestricted medical license to practice in the United States.
• Commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centered care.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

The Reno campus operates 64 hospital beds, 60 Community Living Center beds, 14 ED beds, 12 ICU beds and 14 inpatient psych beds, in addition to four Community Based Outpatient Clinics and one rural outreach clinic. Academic affiliations for VASNHCS are the University Of Nevada School Of Medicine and the East Bay Surgical Program at the University of California, San Francisco. Approximately 45 medical, surgical, and psychiatry residents rotate annually through VASNHCS. Reno VA has 4 surgical suites in addition to cystoscopy and urology anesthesia suites. Approximately 50-55 cases per week are performed in orthopedics, general, ENT, urology, vascular, thoracic and GYN surgical specialties/subspecialties.

Federal Retirement Plan:

• VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
• How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
• Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
• The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
• For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
• In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
