Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center is seeking an experienced and visionary physician educator to serve as the Founding Program Director of our new ACGME-accredited Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program. This is a rare leadership opportunity to design, launch, and lead a dynamic training program from the ground up in one of Georgia’s most vibrant academic communities.

About Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center

Piedmont Athens is a 427-bed, non-profit regional referral center serving a 17-county area in Northeast Georgia. As a Level II Trauma Center and Level III NICU, the hospital is equipped with advanced technologies and comprehensive women’s services—including high-risk obstetrics, minimally invasive surgery, urogynecology, and gynecologic oncology.

The hospital is part of Piedmont Healthcare, a leading system in Georgia known for its strategic growth, strong clinical infrastructure, and commitment to expanding academic medicine across the state. This new residency program will be a key pillar of that academic mission.

Position Overview

As the Founding Program Director, you will be responsible for all aspects of building the Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program—including curriculum design, faculty recruitment, ACGME accreditation, and long-term program strategy. This role offers the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy by establishing a strong, mission-aligned training environment that addresses the evolving healthcare needs of women across the region.

Key Responsibilities

  • - Lead the development and implementation of the program’s vision, curriculum, and evaluation strategy
  • - Recruit and develop core faculty and administrative staff
  • - Navigate the ACGME application and site visit process
  • - Cultivate an inclusive learning environment grounded in professionalism, evidence-based care, and patient-centered outcomes
  • - Promote resident wellness, diversity, equity, and scholarly activity
  • - Maintain a clinical practice in obstetrics and gynecology
  • - Collaborate with Piedmont leadership to integrate future fellowship and research opportunities

Minimum Qualifications

  • - MD or DO from an accredited institution
  • - Board Certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • - Eligibility for unrestricted medical licensure in Georgia
  • - Minimum of three years of graduate medical education (GME) experience
  • - Demonstrated leadership in academic or residency program development

Preferred Qualifications

  • - Prior experience leading or assisting with a new residency program launch
  • - Knowledge of ACGME accreditation requirements and site visit preparation
  • - History of faculty development, mentorship, or DEI initiatives
  • - Scholarly activity in medical education or women’s health
