Fun Facts about Washington Heights

  • The Wizard of Washington Heights: Did you know that Harry Houdini is buried just outside Washington Heights? His final resting place is in nearby Machpelah Cemetery, a short drive from the neighborhood, and he spent much time performing in the area.
  • Home to the Highest Natural Point in Manhattan: While Bennett Park is known for being historic, it’s also the literal top of Manhattan. At 265 feet above sea level, it’s the highest natural point on the island—higher than any skyscraper when it comes to original terrain!
  • A Famous Underground Tunnel Lies Beneath: Beneath the neighborhood lies the Amtrak “Freedom Tunnel,” a semi-abandoned train tunnel that became an underground art gallery for graffiti artists and a haven for “mole people” in the 1980s. Today, it’s a spot for urban explorers (though technically trespassing).
  • Home of Secret Stairs and Hidden Alleys: Washington Heights is known for its steep hills, leading to a network of secret staircases and tucked-away alleys. If you explore the area, you’ll find Instagram-worthy spots like the 215th Street Steps—NYC’s version of San Francisco-style stairs.
  • Famous for Dairy?!?: In 1934, an actual cow was milked at the top of the George Washington Bridge. Yes, you read that right—a live cow was hoisted up to the bridge’s highest point and milked as part of a publicity stunt for the Borden Dairy Company. The company’s mascot, Elsie the Cow, was already famous, but they took things to a whole new level (literally) by demonstrating the freshness of their dairy products…from 800 feet in the air.
