Hospitalist Medical Director – Internal Medicine

 

Summary
The Hospitalist Medical Director provides and oversees high-quality inpatient medical care for a diverse patient population. This role blends direct clinical practice with leadership responsibilities, serving as the primary liaison between the hospital medicine service, hospital administration, and other departments. The Medical Director plays a key role in shaping clinical operations, ensuring quality and safety, and supporting a strong academic environment.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide and manage direct inpatient care, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and coordination of services for Internal Medicine patients.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate residents and medical students in both clinical and hospital settings.
  • Collaborate with hospital leadership to develop and monitor quality, safety, and performance metrics.
  • Serve as liaison between Hospital Medicine, hospital administration, and other departments to enhance care delivery and operational efficiency.
  • Participate in recruitment, orientation, and professional development of hospitalist providers.
  • Support educational programs, conferences, and curriculum development within CMU’s residency and medical education framework.
  • Lead or contribute to quality improvement initiatives and interdisciplinary meetings.

 

Allocation

  • Clinical (0.7 FTE): Regular inpatient day shifts with integrated teaching of students and residents.
  • Administrative (0.3 FTE): Leadership responsibilities including program oversight, committee participation, and departmental coordination.

 

Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree; Board Certified/Eligible in Internal Medicine (ABIM).
  • Eligible for Michigan medical licensure and faculty appointment with CMU College of Medicine.
  • Demonstrated leadership, teaching, and communication skills.
  • Commitment to serving diverse and underserved populations.

 

Work Environment

Moderate physical activity; potential exposure to infectious materials requiring appropriate safety precautions.
