Opportunity Overview

Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health is seeking an accomplished and forward-thinking Chair of Anesthesia to lead one of Central Pennsylvania’s most respected anesthesia departments. This is a rare opportunity for a dynamic physician leader to define the future of anesthesia care across a top-ranked regional health system and within the broader Penn Medicine network.

The Chair will oversee all anesthesia services for Lancaster General Hospital – a 602-bed, Level One Trauma Center and U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospital” – as well as several outpatient and ambulatory locations. The ideal candidate will bring strong clinical experience, strategic insight, and a passion for fostering collaboration and clinical excellence.

The Role

As the executive clinical and operational leader for anesthesia services, the Chair will:

  • Shape a vision for comprehensive, high-quality anesthesia care across inpatient and outpatient sites.
  • Lead a talented team of 35 anesthesiologists and more than 60 CRNAs dedicated to exceptional care and safety.
  • Drive a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement, ensuring high reliability and zero harm.
  • Partner closely with hospital and system leadership to align departmental goals with Penn Medicine’s mission and strategic priorities.
  • Advance clinical innovation and operational performance through data-driven quality, safety, and efficiency initiatives.
  • Oversee financial and resource stewardship, including budgeting, productivity, and operational planning.
  • Promote professional growth and engagement across the department.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school
  • Completion of an accredited anesthesiology residency
  • Board Certification in Anesthesiology
  • Eligibility for unrestricted Pennsylvania medical license
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a complex healthcare organization
  • Proven ability to build teams, inspire collaboration, and achieve measurable quality and operational outcomes
