Founded in 1773, Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia, is the first public facility in the United States dedicated solely for the care and treatment of the mentally ill. Today, our newly constructed state-of-the-art campus is situated on 500 acres with two patient care buildings and a staff of over 900 caring for 302 adult patients. Eastern State Hospital is part of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) system, is accredited by the Joint Commission, and a federally designated as a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). Benefits of this designation include participation in the Virginia State Loan Repayment Program and the Conrad 30 J1 Waiver Program.
