Cleveland Clinic, one of the world’s most distinguished academic medical centers announces a search for a visionary leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology within the Integrated Hospital Care Institute (IHI):

This is a unique opportunity to lead a nationally recognized department within one of the nation’s top healthcare systems. Applicants should be an established or rising star in the field of Anesthesiology and have an MD/DO, MD/PhD or DO/PhD with extensive (10+ years) clinical leadership experience. The successful candidate will also be an accomplished academic leader at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor to guide our department’s mission in teaching, research, and service. Position Overview:

The Chair will provide strategic, clinical, and academic leadership for a large, diverse department that delivers perioperative anesthesia care across the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus, it’s regional hospitals, and enterprise locations in Ohio and Florida. This oversight ensures alignment of clinical excellence, operational efficiency, and academic advancement across all sites within these regions.

The Chair will also strategically develop and lead the department, with oversight across Cleveland Clinic’s global locations in the United States, United Kingdom, Abu Dhabi, and Canada, as well as within the Cleveland Innovation District.

The successful candidate will foster a culture of clinical excellence, innovation, collaboration, and inclusivity, while advancing the department’s missions in patient care, education, and research.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and oversee all clinical, academic, and administrative operations of the Department of Anesthesiology.
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop a diverse team of faculty, residents, fellows, and staff.
  • Advance quality, safety, and patient experience initiatives across perioperative services.
  • Collaborate with institutional leaders to drive innovation in anesthesia care delivery and perioperative medicine.
  • Promote and support research, scholarly activity, and educational excellence, including partnerships with the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University.
  • Represent the department within the Cleveland Clinic enterprise and in national/international forums.

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Board certification in Anesthesiology and eligibility for licensure in Ohio.
  • A distinguished record of clinical, academic, and administrative leadership in anesthesiology.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and team-building skills.
  • Experience in overseeing and advancing research and education in an academic medical center is highly desirable.
  • Responsibility for the overall success of the residency, fellowship, and school of nurse anesthesia programs, ensuring that each program meets its educational and operational goals.

About the Department:
The Cleveland Clinic Department of Anesthesiology is one of the largest anesthesiology departments in the country. The department provides clinical care, education, research, and resuscitation services in northeast Ohio and Florida, with enterprise-wide leadership responsibilities across these regions. In addition, the Chair will maintain oversight of Cleveland Clinic London (CCL) and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (CCAD) to ensure global alignment in standards and strategy. The department in northeast Ohio provides anesthetic care in 200 ORs and more than 100 non-OR anesthesia (NORA) locations across our Main Campus, 10 regional hospitals, 7 Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs), and 5 Ambulatory Endoscopy Centers (AECs). This team provided anesthesia care for 227,000 cases in 2024. Our organizational structure is an employed model, with staff anesthesiologists medically directing residents, fellows, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and certified anesthesiologist assistants. The mission of the Anesthesiology Department is to be a recognized leader in perioperative care through education, research, and innovation within an environment that creates a safe, effective, efficient, and best experience for our patients and caregivers. We accomplish this vision by collaborating with each other, other institutes and departments within the Cleveland Clinic, and with outside entities.

About Integrated Hospital Care Institute (IHI):

The Integrated Hospital-Care Institute (IHI) at the Cleveland Clinic Health System (CCHS) is home to nearly 4,000 caregivers and a faculty of over 1,200 physicians and scientists in Ohio, Florida, London, and Abu-Dhabi. The Integrated Hospital-Care Institute (IHI) at the Cleveland Clinic is a unique model that does not exist elsewhere in healthcare. IHI brings hospital-based services under one umbrella by bringing together 5 Departments (Emergency Services, Hospital Medicine, Pulmonary-Critical Care, Infectious Disease, and Anesthesiology) that are home to 12 divisions.

The Institute also has 2 Centers (Critical Care and Perioperative Medicine) designed to organize the clinical, education, and research activities of these services across the entire Cleveland Clinic Health System.
