MISSION OR GOAL OF UNIT: The mission of the Division of Hospital Medicine is to provide world class care and world class caring for every child and every family we serve every day. We work in partnership with other pediatric medical and surgical specialists to provide direct pediatric patient care for children with acute or chronic diseases and those with special health care needs. Pediatric Hospital Medicine plays an integral role in the tripartite mission of the Department of Pediatrics. Our faculty contribute to and lead educational programs (medical students, residents, fellows and ancillary staff), quality and safety initiatives, clinical research, and hospital committee work. The division is essential to furthering the strategic mission and goals of CHoR and VCU Health System (VCUHS).

CHIEF PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION IN SUPPORT OF ABOVE MISSION OR GOAL: The Children’s Hospital of Richmond (CHoR) at Virginia Commonwealth University is currently seeking an academic faculty member for the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine. CHoR at VCU is committed to the provision of the highest quality patient care and service excellence. This is a full time position providing direct care on the academic teams at our quaternary children’s hospital. In addition to clinical care, faculty have the opportunity to develop career interests in medical education, quality improvement, clinical research, or hospital leadership.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Teaching: Physician will provide teaching and mentorship to medical students, residents and fellows when applicable. Physician will provide education to ancillary staff as needed.
• Service: Physician will serve on hospital or departmental (CHoR or VCUHS) committees when appropriate, and engage in professional activities through journal review, conference presentations and national organization committee work.
• Clinical (Anticipate 1.0 Full Time Clinical Equivalent effort (cFTE)): Physicians provide clinical service as a Pediatric Hospitalist in the Children’s Hospital of Richmond. Shifts are distributed equitably based upon FTE allocation, additional roles and responsibilities, and seasonal trends. A full-time clinical role is 152 shifts for FY26.
• Administrative (Anticipate effort will be from time not on clinical service): All faculty are expected to participate in committee work, development of clinical guidelines, and participate in division and department faculty meetings and educational conferences for both faculty development and fellowship training. Our faculty take pride in our contributions to training the next generation of pediatricians and academic pediatric hospitalists.  
• Research: The Children’s Hospital of Richmond, the Department of Pediatrics, and Division of Hospital Medicine support basic science, translations, health services, clinical, improvement science, and medical education research. The Children’s Health Research Institute supports research through internal grant opportunities, mentorship, and research staff to support clinician scientists through the life cycle of research. Financial support is possible for specific academic or research interests of the faculty member.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED

• Candidates must be board certified in pediatrics or internal medicine-pediatrics.
• All candidates must be eligible for medical licensure in Virginia.
• Drug Enforcement Agency certification
• Credentialing at VCUHS is required.
• Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

PREFERRED 

• Two or more years of clinical experience in pediatric hospital medicine.
• Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
• Completion of Pediatric Fellowship training is preferred but not required.
• Current board certification in pediatric hospital medicine is preferred but not required.
• Prior leadership experience or program development in pediatric hospital medicine.
• Prior experience or formal training in clinical research

The Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Pediatrics is dedicated to providing comprehensive, compassionate, state-of-the-art pediatric health care, research and education at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, a full-service children’s hospital within the VCU Medical Center. Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU recently opened a multi-story, high-tech ambulatory pavilion for pediatric services.  The new facility will meet the growing need for outpatient services for children in our community.

CHoR's outpatient pavilion is the largest, most advanced outpatient facility dedicated to children in the region. The new pavilion includes diagnostic and treatment services for children, bringing together the majority of outpatient pediatric services currently on the MCV campus to one location. It is designed to meet the unique health care needs of children, and to provide Richmond the most advanced and coordinated care possible:

The facility is a 640,000 square foot, multi-story building and includes a 7-story parking deck with more than 600 spaces.
The new pavilion houses 72 exam rooms arranged in clinic pods to optimize a multidisciplinary care model. Each pod includes 12 exam rooms, a treatment room, support space and a centralized clinical team.
The new pavilion features pediatric-dedicated imaging, surgical and endoscopy procedure rooms, as well as pediatric faculty offices.
The pavilion is designed with future expansion in mind. It can accommodate additional clinic pods and operating rooms, as demand for these services increases.
