VA New England Healthcare System is Hiring Primary Care Physicians

The VA New England Healthcare System (VA-NE) seeks to fill various Full and Part-time Primary Care physician opportunities in the New England area.  VA-NE is comprised of eight robust medical centers and associated community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) located in West Haven, Connecticut; Bedford, Massachusetts; Boston, Massachusetts; Leeds, Massachusetts; Augusta, Maine; Manchester, New Hampshire; Providence, Rhode Island; and White River Junction, Vermont. 

VA New England leads the VHA's Primary Care initiative in employing the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) model to leverage evidence based standardized health care practices toward optimizing the unique contributions of each discipline on the PACT. The team aims to empower and equip patients to take charge of their health and well-being by offering complimentary and integrative health care approaches that enhance self-empowerment, self-healing, and self-care. Our smaller panel sizes, wide array of support services and virtual care options provide more flexibility for patients to engage in their own health care and with their team.

Our skilled Primary Care Physicians are responsible for providing excellent care to our nation’s veteran population in the New England area.  Salaries range includes $225,000 to $265,000 per year

  • Recruitment/Relocation Incentive is authorized for positions in certain VA – NE locations.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnostic work-up and clinic intervention, including comprehensive patient assessment, health history, physical examination, and patient education to Veterans in the Primary Care team setting.
  • Works collaboratively with other health care professionals to accomplish patient, service, and medical center goals, promoting and embracing the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) model of care, utilizing Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, Excellence (ICARE) values throughout the clinic.
  • To be eligible, physicians must have and maintain a full, unrestricted license.
  • Board Certification is preferred but not required.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2025, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $23,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $31,000.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years service
