Join UCSF as Nighttime Liver Hospitalist – Provide Specialized Care for Liver Transplant Patients at One of the Nation’s Top Academic Health Systems

The UCSF Liver Transplant Service (LTU) is a collaborative program between the Division of Gastroenterology and the Department of Surgery, dedicated to providing world-class care for liver transplant candidates and recipients. UCSF performs 180–200 adult liver transplants annually, with outstanding waitlist and post-transplant outcomes.
We are seeking a mission-driven physician to serve as Nighttime Liver Hospitalist, caring for clinically complex patients across med-surg, step-down, and ICU settings. This is a unique opportunity to join a high-volume transplant program and contribute to UCSF’s tradition of excellence in hepatology and transplant medicine.

What We’re Looking For
  • MD or DO degree.
  • Board-certified or board-eligible in Internal Medicine or Surgery.
  • Eligibility for California medical licensure by the time of hire.
  • Strong clinical skills and commitment to high-quality, compassionate care.

Role Details
  • Schedule: 8:00 PM - 7:00 AM
  • Scope: Admit and manage patients on the LTU service, including those in med-surg, step-down, and ICU.
  • Focus: Direct patient care (no supervision or education of trainees required).
  • Census: Average LTU census ~20 patients, with ~4 in ICU.

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. The minimum base salary range for this position is $114,100-344,400. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan?, which provides for eligibility for additional compensation. Specific total compensation will be commensurate with qualifications, experience and leadership responsibilities.
