Aortic Fellowship (1 year)

The Cleveland Clinic’s renowned Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute is pleased to offer a one-year comprehensive surgical fellowship in aortic surgery. This program offers an exceptional opportunity for qualified candidates to gain extensive hands-on experience at one of the most active and accomplished cardiac surgery programs in the world.

Program Highlights

  • High-Volume Exposure: Over 5,000 cardiac surgeries, including >1000 aortic cases annually
    • Aortic root replacement (Bentall and valve sparing, >500/year)
    • Aortic valve repair and aortic valve replacement with root enlargement
    • Aortic dissections
    • Aortic arch procedures (>150-200/year)
    • Thoracoabdominal aortic replacement (>30/year)
    • Exposure to Ross and Ozaki
    • TEVARs (~150/year)
  • Complex and high risk cardiac reoperations

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Technical surgical training in aortic operations and reoperations, TEVARs
    • Perioperative care of cardiac patients
    • Immersive involvement in high-risk cardiac surgery

 

Eligibility Requirements

  • Completion of one of the following:
    • Integrated Thoracic Surgery Residency
    • 4+3 Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency
    • Traditional Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship (2 or 3 years)
    • OR Graduation from a Canadian-accredited Cardiac Surgery Residency
  • Must qualify for a full Ohio medical license

For international medical graduates:

  • Successful completion of all 3 steps of the USMLE
  • At least 2 years of U.S.-based cardiothoracic fellowship training
  • Current H-1 Visa, or eligibility for O-1 visa, or U.S. permanent residency (green card)
