About Kilmarnock
Kilmarnock is the commercial hub of the Northern Neck and the largest incorporated town in Lancaster County. Whether you’re shopping, strolling our charming downtown, grabbing a meal or enjoying Town Centre Park, Kilmarnock is the place to enjoy small town charm, friendly merchants and a warm welcome!
First settled in the mid 1600s, Kilmarnock was originally known as “The Crossroads.” Kilmarnock probably had its beginnings at the intersection of Indian paths which later became the locations of Main Street and East Church Street.
It was in the early 1700’s that William Steptoe began to operate a storehouse and ordinary (a lodging and dining establishment) at this crossroads so that this came to be called “Steptoe’s Ordinary.” In 1764, Robert Gilmour, an agent for a mercantile firm based in Glasgow, Scotland, is thought to have been involved in giving the name of “Kilmarnock” to this location using the name of Kilmarnock, Scotland, where he apparently also owned land.
The earliest known record referenced to “Kilmarnock, Virginia,” can be found in a deed recorded in 1778. It was incorporated as the “Town of Kilmarnock” by an act of the Virginia General Assembly in 1930.
Kilmarnock’s town limits extend across both Lancaster and Northumberland counties and residents pay real estate tax to their respective county as well as the Town. Kilmarnock and surrounding areas are served by the Kilmarnock post office as well. You may have a Kilmarnock mailing address but your property location may not be within the town’s boundaries.
