Summary:
The VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System (VASNHCS) in Reno, Nevada is seeking a dynamic, board?certified Anesthesiologist to serve as Chief of Anesthesiology. This leadership role oversees all clinical, administrative, and quality operations of the Anesthesia Service while providing direct care to Veterans in the operating room and procedural areas.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership, supervision, and direction to anesthesiology physicians and CRNAs.
  • Oversee clinical operations, scheduling, productivity, performance improvement, and compliance within the Anesthesia Service.
  • Deliver a full range of anesthesia services, including general, regional, and monitored anesthesia care.
  • Participate in operating room management, surgical leadership meetings, and interdisciplinary planning.
  • Ensure adherence to VA policies, credentialing, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support training and development opportunities for staff; mentor trainees as applicable.
  • Collaborate with Surgical Service Line leadership to optimize patient safety, workflow, and access.
  • Participate in call rotation as appropriate for the service.

Qualifications:

  • U.S. citizenship (required).
  • MD or DO degree from an accredited institution.
  • Board certification in Anesthesiology.
  • Active, unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state or territory.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in anesthesia practice or perioperative services preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and team?building skills.

Work Schedule:
Typically Monday–Friday; administrative and clinical duties.
Call responsibilities as assigned.

Facility and Location

The Reno campus operates 64 hospital beds, 60 Community Living Center beds, 14 ED beds, 12 ICU beds and 14 inpatient psych beds, in addition to four Community Based Outpatient Clinics and one rural outreach clinic. Academic affiliations for VASNHCS are the University Of Nevada School Of Medicine and the East Bay Surgical Program at the University of California, San Francisco. Approximately 45 medical, surgical, and psychiatry residents rotate annually through VASNHCS. Reno VA has 4 surgical suites in addition to cystoscopy and urology anesthesia suites. Approximately 50-55 cases per week are performed in orthopedics, general, ENT, urology, vascular, thoracic and GYN surgical specialties/subspecialties.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 12.2% of the employee’s salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 16.6% of the employee’s salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2025, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $23,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $31,000.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
